As famous world-class historic city, Xi’an has made remarkable achievements in heritage conservation and utilization in recent years. However, as acceleration of urbanization process and the expansion of construction land, many great heritage sites which were located in suburban area in the past are slowly surrounded by new planned districts, compared to the previous, fast economic growth has brought greater impacts and challenges to cultural heritage and their surrounding, contradiction between protection and development become increasingly obvious. Especially for the surrounding setting of historic heritage, whether planning and construction practice or academic research, significantly lack of attention. Faced with this situation, this thesis aims to focus on researching the relationship between great heritage sites and their setting in Xi’an, as well as how to conserve and construct their surrounding spatial setting reasonably. This thesis is divided into four parts. The first part, elaborate the related theory and practice about great heritage site protection and cultural heritage setting domain. On this basis, summarize the development of Xi’an great heritage sites protection and utilization, as well as models, characteristics with trend,at the same time analyze the problems and reasons of current site surrounding protection. Then based on the cognition of characteristics and value of large scale geographical environments on which great heritage sites locates, point out that conservation and construction of site surrounding setting should based on the protection of their the large scale landscape space. The second part, starting from the idea of integrity protection, put forward the ideas of constructing "historic site zone" system, suggest this system to be controlled construction area, with inside cultural environment as one of the factors which influence urban space layout. By discussion on the method and basis of hierarchical division of this system, research the way of combining its overall protection and development into urban planning system, as well as dividing space and hierarchy of Xi’an "historic site zone" system. The third part, explore the relationship between great heritage site and urban development from functional, ecological, and spatial perspectives. Include researching principles of urban-rural integration and industrial adjustment in "historic site zone"; discussing the appropriate urban function of great heritage sites’ surrounding; analyzing the influence of great heritage site on urban ecological network scale from macroscopic to microcosmic; then exploring the requirement and construction control principles to the physical space of great heritage sites’ surrounding, according to the cultural characteristics of different sites types. Finally, through the multi-dimensional comprehensive research, put forward four suitable pattern types of great heritage sites’ surrounding in Xi’an, they are surrounded by comparing mode, corridor isolation mode, occlusion transition mode and open transition mode. Through case studies, expounds the existence conditions and planning and design strategies of different patterns, then sum up the principles of conservation and construction of different modes. Related conclusions may provide useful planning models for those heritage sites which close to the edge of city, be faced with huge threat by urban expansion, as well as those facing urban renewal and transformation at their surrounding area. They may also have guiding significance for the coordinated development between overall large heritage sites’ setting conservation and urban construction.
