Study On The Development Course Of The Forest Protection Discipline In China

The Forest Protection discipline in China germinated during the early 20 th century, with the development of nearly 110 years especially since the 1990’s, it has made remarkable achievements. Today as in the 21 st century, this study reviewed the history of the Forest Protection Discipline in China in the past 110 years, it would not only helpto clarify the discipline development context, summarize the experience, find out insufficient, but also havesignificant and practical meaning in directing the future development orientations. There are plenteous historical information and data on the development of the Forest Protection discipline in Chinabeing accumulated. However, comprehensive and systematic sorting and study on it hasn’t been done. Therefore, this study would apply to fill this research gap.Abundant literature and historical data on historical development and scientific research of the Forest Protection Discipline in China were gained from books, monograph, scientific journals, networks, expert interviews, and so on. Applying with complex methods combining history and logic, qualitative description together with quantitative analysis, I comprehensively analyzed the literatures, historical data and the interviews, and innovatively divided the development process of the Forest Protection Discipline in China into four historical periods, considering specific characters of the discipline in each: the sprouting period(before 1949), the formative period(1950-1976), the developing period(1977-1999) and the maturity period(2000-now). The historical evolution, scientific research progress, textbooks, and monographs, major scientific and technological achievements in the Forest Protection Discipline, as well as the laws and policies promulgated by the government impacting the discipline’s development in each period, were elaborated, analyzed and studied.The results showed that within the 110 years’ development, the Forest Protection Discipline in China started from scratch, developed from weak to strong; its process was of twists and turns, however it has made a series of achievements: the discipline development orientation has become more and more clear; the discipline system construction is approximating with well-established; the scientific researches have achieved remarkable progress; the innovation platform construction has begun to take shape; the international corporation has being enhanced; a lot of forest protection specialists have been trained for the country and the society; quantities of operative practical technology closely related to production have been applied; the Forestry Protection Discipline has also made significant contribution to the national economic development, homeland ecological safety, and the construction of ecological civilization.From this study, the deficiency of the development of the Forest Protection Discipline was found, five policy recommendations, five improving directions, and 12 key research areas were proposed to promote the discipline development, which showed great guidance and significancy for the perfection of the Forest Protection Discipline in China.
