Xiesheng words (sinigrams with shared phonetic symbol) are essential in the study of ancient Chinese phonology, especially on the pronunciation reconstruction of Initials. In recent years, many scholars favor to reconstruct Consonant Cluster to explain those SXWs (Special Xiesheng Words), which has drawn much academic attention. Predecessors discuss the SXWs by examples, seldom delve into those SXWs in a systemic way. Based on statistics and discrimination of Xiesheng classes, this dissertation selects SXWs of Dental-laryngeal Pronunciation as the research subject, collects extensively Fanqie(反切)of the Middle Chinese reflected by Guangyun(廣韻),Jiyun(集韻)and Jingdianshiwen(经典释文)Besides, we has explored the phonetic situation of SXWs in the Zhou and Qin Dynasty by investigating the text materials such as the phonetic notation, Durou(讀若), Jiajie (假借),Yiwen(異文),Doublets(聯绵詞)in ancient literatures. This dissertation is divided into eight chapters. The first chapter introduces the prior study on this topic, including materials and method used. The second chapter discusses how to research Initials through the Xiesheng Classes, explains why Zhuxiezi(主諧字)has different pronunciations with the Beixiezi (被諧字)in original word-formation and how to research the ancient phonology from Xiesheng series. From the third to the sixth chapter, we has explored the SXWs between Dental-laryngeal Pronunciation and other places of articulation such as Zhang(章)group, Duanzhi(端知)groups, Jingzhuang (精莊)groups and Bangfei (帮非)groups. We have also pointed out the problems of prior study. The seventh chapter discusses some important issues in the research of the SXWs from six respects:exchange-pronouncing synonym(同義换讀),homograph(同形字),mistaking the phonetic symbol, derivation by phonetic change(音變構詞),sandhi and analogy of pronunciation. The eighth chapter criticizes the Hypothesis of the Consonant Cluster from the analogy of the SXWs in Initials and rhyme-group, match rules of Initials and rhyme-group.Though the study, we find that there are about20%SXWs which has no connections with historical sound change in Dental-laryngeal Pronunciation. In fact, if we consider the factor of Xiesheng Classes, the number of SXWs is even less. Besides, we also find that the pronunciation of most of SXWs was formed in the ancient period. However, the Hypothesis of the Consonant Cluster has certain contradictions in explaining the innate materials of ancient Chinese materials, the evolution of historical sound change and match rules of Initials and rhyme-group. We conclude that the SXWs is a simple consonant which is systemic corresponding to the Middle Chinese phonology. The sound of some SXWs was probably changed by medial, vowel or exception sound change.
