Xun Zi was one of the most sophisticated Confucianists of the Pre-Qin-Dynasty period who occupied a particularly important position in China’s history of Philosophy and Management. The book Xunzi (the single word spelling indicates the book) collected elaborately essays which reflects main thoughts of many other famous philosophers of his time, was often regarded as a critical summary of Pre-Qin-Dynasty schools, thus became an indispensable part of the books and writings of China’s traditional management philosophy. The Xunzi elaborated the theories on how to govern the nation, the society and the people with a view to realize stable development of the nation and gradual improvement of the people. Not only did it have a far-reaching influence on the development of ancient Chinese society, but also is of unique value to modern management. This dissertation attempts to have an in-depth research on the Xunzi by means of classifying, analyzing, generalizing relating theoretical references. This dissertation consists of six chapters which can be divided into three parts.The first part including Chapter Ⅰ and Chapter Ⅱ focuses on the essence, peculiarity and main idea of management philosophy reflected in the Xunzi. In Chapter Ⅰ the essential thought of management philosophy of the Xunzi----mphasis of Ritual and Law is discussed. The management philosophy of the Xunzi is described as consisting of the following three main characters:Taking Confucian as the core value, Bridge of Confucianism and Legalism, Adopting the essence of the Hundred Schools of Thoughts.In Chapter Ⅱ it elaborates the main idea of the management philosophy promoted by the Xunzi including:The primary principle of society management is rule by ritual, The basic tool of society management shall be maintained by rule of law, The ruler of society shall abide by the principle of the emperor, The other governors of the society shall abide by the principle of the ministers. It further describes the experience of applying the management philosophy of the Xunzi.The second part including Chapter Ⅳ to Chapter Ⅴ made a systematic analysis of the foundation of this management philosophy. The third chapter discussed the foundation of view of nature----the duty difference between human and nature. The fourth chapter discussed the epistemological foundation----knowing what’s right first and doing it afterwards. The fifth chapter is the foundation in terms of the nature of mankind-----human nature is evil and virtue is factitious. This dissertation attempts to further discuss Xunzi’s value on management philosophy, how to apply it in the practice of management and what inspiration it may bring about.The third part including Chapter Ⅶ mainly discussed the historical influence, limitations of the time and the present value of Xunzi’s management philosophy.At the end of this dissertation, the author emphasized the significance of adopting and practicing in an creative manner for the Xunzi’s management philosophy on the basis of a brief analysis of its innate logics and components.
