Nowadays, with China’s striding into the international arena for its significantachievements and considerable influence, C-E translation for global communicationhas become an important way for the world to understand China. It plays a key role inhelping to show a good image of China, to spread its position and political advocate,to enhance its international status and soft power, to create a favorable internationalenvironment for public opinion, to promote mutual understanding between nations,and to sustain world peace. C-E translation for global communication possessescross-language, cross-cultural and cross-border features. The material itself hascultural flavors, political overtones and pays attention to its effectiveness. In theprocess of translation, language, culture, politics, economy and ideology of the nativelanguage society and the target language society would affect the quality of C-Etranslation for global communication from the macro or micro aspects. As the carrierof language and culture, C-E translation for global communication bears culturalcharacteristics. Therefore, with cultural differences as its entry point and thecross-cultural pragmatics as its theory framework, this study discusses how to dispelthe cultural barriers with a purpose to achieve effective and successful C-E translationfor global communication. This dissertation comprises seven chapters.Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the research background, theoreticalframework, the major questions, the significance, the research methods and the layoutof the study.Chapter Two begins with literature review of an overall comment on C-Etranslation for global communication and the related theories for cross-culturalpragmatics and C-E translation for global communication, such as relevance theory,functional equivalence theory, skopos theory and constructivism, and as well asreviewing the situation of cross-cultural pragmatics research at home and abroad. Chapter Three is a perspective on the principles of C-E translation for globalcommunication in the cross-cultural context. There are six principles that should beborne in mind while dealing with the translation. The principles of the distinctionbetween domestic and foreign readers; the distinction between foreign readers;implicit expression strategies; text-centered; enhancing mutual understanding betweennations; and national interest.Chapter Four mainly concerns with the problems of C-E translation for globalcommunication on cross-cultural aspects and the improved countermeasures. C-Etranslation for global communication problems are caused by the errors of languageitself, such as vocabulary, grammar, and spelling; and the errors beyond languageitself, such as expressive ways, cultural factors, and native speaker’s psychology,etc.In response to these problems, the author improves countermeasures, includingclarifying the differences between the two languages, taking appropriate measures inthe translation, dealing well with cultural differences and social differences betweennative language and target language.Chapter Five studies the relevance of cross-cultural pragmatics and C-Etranslation for global communication. This chapter focuses on three aspects of theproblem: first, cultural interpretation in C-E translation for global communication;second, the relationship between pragmalinguistic aspects and C-E translation forglobal communication; third, sociopragmatic aspects and C-E translation for globalcommunication.Chapter Six conducts the strategy research of C-E translation for globalcommunication based on cross-cultural pragmatics. Based on the framework ofcross-cultural pragmatics, the author discusses the characteristics of C-E translationfor global communication and the strategies by analyzing the cases of newspaper,magazine, advertisement and press conference. The main purpose of this is tohighlight the strategies for the cultural factors between the native language and targetlanguage and the importance of culture in C-E translation for global communication. Chapter Seven concludes the dissertation. Based on the discussion in theprevious chapters, further thinking about the relationship between the strategies ofC-E translation for global communication and cross-cultural pragmatics is proposed.The present study is then summarized, pointing out the existing problems, limitationsand expecting a plan for further study.
