Since ancient times, China and South Korea are close neighbors across the sea, and also belong to the Confucian culture circle. The two countries have in-depth communication and similar history in various fields, such as politics, economics, culture, and literature. Especially since late19th century, China and South Korea were invaded by Japanese Imperialism to varying degrees, experiencing the same history, and forming similar literary phenomenon. As a Korea citizen who lives in the second half of20th century, I think it is significant to thoroughly discuses this period of history in20th century. Therefore, I paid more attention to this problem when I was in South Korea. I also selected related topics for research in my bachelor and master study. In2008, I obtained the great honor to be admitted into Zhejiang University for the major of Chinese Contemporary Literary Study from South Korea. Based on the above situation, I had no hesitation to choose "Comparative Study on Female Consciousness of Modern Female Writers in China and South Korea" as the topic for my PhD dissertation. I think it is more practical and meaningful for me to choose this topic. There are many similarities and comparability in modern literature research of China and South Korea. Xiao Hong and Jiang Jing’ai are two famous writers in the history of modern literature in China and South Korea. The two writers occupy a very prominent position in the literature of China and South Korea, especially in the field of female literature. This paper chooses a series of works of Xiao Hong and Jiang Jing’ai regarding nation, country, class and female as its object. It takes female consciousness and female destiny as the angle to start and using the comparative study approach, and comprehensively generalizes and analyzes the female literature in China and South Korea from the aspects of the developing track, historical fate, contribution of the era and the similarities and differences between each other, in order to provide reference and inspiration for creation and research, especially for that of female literature. The whole paper consists of three parts, introduction, main body, and conclusion. The introduction section defines the study object, female literature and related concepts. It also introduces the current research situation of female literature, the intention of writing the paper and its specific content framework. The first chapter sorts out the female literature of20th century in China and South Korea generally from a microscopic perspective. It consists of the following two parts. One generally sorts out the changes of the concept of female literature and the representation of female consciousness in China and South Korea. The other longitudinally analyzes the process of development of modern female literature in China and South Korea. The second chapter mainly analyzes the subjects and objects and life feelings in the two writers’works. It starts with the changes of history and society, love and marriage, and life care, and reveals the same and different tragic appearance of their own nation. The third chapter mainly studies the gender concept and consciousness of misery of Xiao Hong and Jiang Jing’ai. It launches from three aspects, the tragic living condition of female, the disruption of suffering life of people, and vulnerable groups living at the bottom of the society particularly female and their tragic destiny. The forth chapter mainly discusses the character building of the two writers. It is divided into two categories, male and female. The former represents foolish male in the countryside and intellectual citizens in the civilized cities. The latter represents female who had tragic destiny and living in tough environment, who resisted and struggled against old morals, and those who received modern education. It reflects their modern female concept. The fifth chapter analyzes the ways of narration of the two writers. It consists of three levels, esthetic pursuit, genre structure, and language style. It compares and analyzes the similarity and differences from these angles, discussing their unique artistic style and exploring the reason of the forming. The conclusion briefly summarizes on the literary achievement, historical limits, and historic and practical significance of the novels of Xiao Hong and Jiang Jing’ai based on the former parts.
