Historic urban quarters are not only one kind of the substantial cultural heritages, but also the architectural space in essence. Taking historic urban quarters as architectural space in the first place is the foundation of this essay. Social actions are the dynamic reflection of human consciousness and spirit. The identity of people and their city is made up from language interactions between residents during their life. It is hard to avoid challenges for historic urban quarters and other traditional urban space during the development of modern city because the social life is composed by the dynamic interactions and every individual has his/her specific characteristics, emotions and personal system of reasons, and what’s more important, the society as a systematic whole is raising up more demands for individuals to unify themselves according to social system not to their daily life. Instrumental reasons will take advantage of communicative reasons, when personal social interactions are paid less attention in the case of social prosperity. That’s when social system functions as one while the daily life and social structures start falling apart, which is the main phenomenon in the post-modern period of society. Historic urban quarters have distinguishable advantages in its substantial spaces and cultural heritages, which are very beneficial for personal language interactions. There are much more cozy open spaces and public sphere for people to communicate with each other and hang out for hours when they like it. Diversity in the functions of spaces is another big point to attract people to gather around. They have enough things to do inside the architecture and outside on the streets, which is an important part of their living environments. It is of great necessity for us to discover a positive way to make a balance between historic urban quarters and modern city. There are already many brilliant and effective efforts having been done in this field. Sustainable viability of our urban will be coming out of the new balance between tradition and modernism, also between communicative reasons and instrumental reasons.
