The present dissertation is part of the project-"Ancient Chinese sculpture copy and the building of contemporary Chinese higher education system of art," which is presided by CAFA doctorial tutor Yuan Yunsheng. The dissertation offers some observations about basic education, which consists of two parts. The first is a study of several issues in basic education, and the second contains some thoughts on the choice of teaching materials and textbooks. With theoretical tools borrowed from education history, art history, the theory of fine arts, culture history and archaeology, the present dissertation, focusing on the artistic practice, attempts to point out and analyze some problems in the basic education of art. It is the intention of the author to question the basic education in Chinese art (i.e. the necessity of reform) by illustrating the detrimental effects brought by the indiscriminate adoption of Western thinking and modeling concepts to replace the thinking, the modeling and the value from Chinese tradition. The research also explores some new possibilities (i.e. the possibility of reform) through the study of the achievements of the20th-century archaeology. The background of the present dissertation is the westernization of Chinese art education in the recent century. Its primary purpose, however, is not to dwell on the shortcomings and inadequacy of the imported western art education system, but to emphasize that the foundation education of art and the aesthetic education underneath are both, in essence, a culture issue, that the Chinese foundation education of art should be an aesthetic education established on our own culture basics.
