Huagudeng, a pervading art form in the Huahe River area, is a kind of folksong-dance with colorful patterns and flexible forms. The inheriting group makes it possible forHuagudeng to evolve when it tries to pass it on from generation to generation and makeinnovation on it. Studies on Huagudeng, previously restricted to a certain place, time andpattern, are not overall, systematic and rational fieldwork research from the subjectiveperspective of ethnomusicology. It’s unfavorable to its inheritance, theoretical research andcreation.Drawing on the methodology in ethnomusicology and relevant theories in historicalanthropology, folklore, sociology, and ecology, the author conducts a comprehensivethree-dimensional study on huagudeng artists’ survival, group life, song-dance life and therelationship with folk customs. By analyzing and probing into the existing problems, the authorgains a thorough knowledge of how and why the main community of lantern-players becomespopular in the Huahe River area. The author thinks the popularized trend in inheriting Huagudengin the Huaihe River area is formed in the integration and mutual nourishment of the maincommunity, song-dance system and all kinds of custom. In the process, the folk song-dance artprospers due to the prosperity of main communities within the same region. In the actingconcerned of Huagudeng song-dance art, the sustainable development of Huagudeng art still isclosely related with the benign ecological stability of Huagudeng art subject.
