the Principles for the Conservation of Heritage Sites in China is publicedwith a collaboration among three institutional partners—China’s State Administrationfor Cultural Heritage (SACH), the Getty Conservation Institute(GCI), and theAustralian Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH), formerly the AustralianHeritage Commission. The aim of the China Principles is to develop national guidelinesfor conservation and management that respect and reflect Chinese traditions andapproaches to conservation under the country’s existing laws for the protection ofcultural heritage. After more than ten years of carrying out, and with development ofeconomic, culture and polity in China, cultural heritage conservation have got furtherprogress. Therefore, it is important to valuate gains and losses, summarize experiencefor filling the gaps and to know where to go in cultura heritage field, through the stoneconservation exercises in these years.Cultural heritage is the precious treasure of all human beings. Stone caves andgrottos in China are of great representativeness and importance both in quantity andquality over the whole world; also it is one of the essential elements among Chineseheritage and Chinese heritage conservation for its complexity. Cuttently, it is nearlyblank in discussion of caves conservation theory and exercise. The paper maycontribute in architecture, heritage conservation and relevant subject through analyseof typical cases, by the way of survey and historic meterials.The paper has six chapters in all. Firstly, in chapter1it introduces researchpurpose, contents and literature review; then in the second part it reviews the historyof research and conservation of Chinese stone caves and grottoes, and discuss thetheory, method and problems before publication of the China Principles; detailedanalysis with the four typical cases, Mogao Grottoes Cave85Project, cave-eavesconstruction project in Yungang grottoes, Dazu Avalokitesvara protect and LongmenGrottoes project is the important contents in the third part, including severaldesicussion in reasons and changes under the cases. The next part (chapter4-5) is tofind out pros and cons of the China Priciples on the guiding of caves conservation,through the comparion research, compared some international priciples, finally the paper end with some advices and conservation strategy based the cons.In all, the paper got some conclusion, firstly it concluded success and shortage inwhole Chinese caves conservation and the China principles made an important role inits progress after2000; then, the paper pointed out, to establish the properconservation procedure, to construct the conservation values and improvemanagement, is the specific expression of the affect; finally, the paper proposed someadvices for improvement of the China principles and stone caves conservation infuture. Though there is long way to go and gaps to fill, we can see the Chinaprinciples help to better conservation with the discussion and introduction of thosestone grottoes and caves projects.
