For long time, it is difficult for researchers on the conservation of culturalrelics to deal with the problem of the safety of large scale cultural relics. This ismainly because the structures of the cultural relics are complicated and theconfiguration is also irregular, exact finite model is difficult to build up and therebythe numerical simulation on the response is hardly to implement. In addition, theconventional test method can meet with the requirement of the conservation ofhistorical relics. In order to overcome the drawbacks in the field of the conservationof relics, this dissertation take the giant iron statue of lion, which is the key historicrelics for protection in China, as an example to study the safety problem of the largescale cultural relics. The main contents of this dissertation are as follows:An on-site test of the structural response of the iron statue of lion with theexisting environmental loads was conducted, and also a non-destructivemeasurement method was proposed in accordance with the principle of theconservation of cultural relics. The proposed method are suitble for both themeasurement of the statue of lion and that for the other kinds of cultural relics. Theresults of the on-site test indicate that the environmental loads have little effect onthe safety of the statue of lion. The above work is also useful for the on-site test ofother kinds of large scale cultural relics.A new method that based on the three-dimensional laser scanning technology isproposed to build up the simulation model of the large scale iron cultural relics. Thethree-dimensional geometric model is built up by using some post-processingtechniques such as reliazation of the data cloud using the three-dimenstional laserscanning, simplification of data, and regression of the surface. The finite elementmodle of the statue of lion was then built up based on the partition of the mesh.Based on the historic references, the virtual restoration of the destructive parts of thestatue was implemented. The above work may help for better realizing the culture inprevious centuries in China.A series of numerical analysis was carried out by incorparating the cracks andthe flaw. Because a lot of cherish cultural relics were distroyed in the disaster ofearthquake or wind, the structural response of the statue of lion under wind andtemperatuer effect is analyzed, and also the earthquake response and the dynamicreliability under earthqueke are analyzed. The results indicate that the statue of lionis safe under the wind load and earthquake. The above research reveals the status ofstress of the statue of lion under disaster loads and it supplies the importantinstruction for the safety assessment of the cultural relics. Three-dimensional stress analysis was performed with respect to the represntive cracks, the results indicatethat the intensity factor of the stress around the tip of the cracks are much smallerthat that of the fracture toughness property and thus, the brittle failure will not occuron the cracks. Under the cycling loads that caused by the day night temperaturedifference and the season temperature difference, the growing time of the crack ofthe statute of the lion is ultimately predicted.A hidden supporting scheme for the statue of lion is proposed and the structuralresponse and the fracture mechanics of the statue that was strengthened by thepropsod scheme is also analyzed, because the present scheme of the support isargument. The results indicate that the iron statue of lion will not collapse and thedamage will also not occured with the propsed supporting shceme, also the growingtime of the crack of the strengthened statute can be greatly extended. Besides, thesimulation on the process of construction is conducted and a scheme that lift thesupport and the statue is proposed. This strengthening scheme can recover theoriginal apperance of the statue of lion on maximum extent and it can be a referencefor the strengthen scheme for the other cultural relics.
