Study Of The Chinese Etymological Meaning

This dissertation mainly studies the Chinese etymological meaning. Through reviewing the history of Chinese etymological meaning, the causes as wells as pros and cons of the consensus and divergences in current Chinese etymological meaning studies are discussed by the dissertation, from two perspectives, the generation mode and types of original words, derivatives and paronyms. Besides, the definition of connotation, nature, characteristics, and the role and influence of etymology in the interpretation and link of paronyms are looked into. It is divided into 6 sections.The introduction mainly states the task, purposes, significance and the value, routes and methods, content and structure, etc of present research.Chapter 1 discusses the etymology and etymological meaning. Started with the review of history of Chinese etymology, summarizes the basic ideas of important scholars on the related questions about etymology and the etymological meaning, comments and evaluates their respective achievements and deficiencies. Through the description of specific performance of the etymological meaning and the analysis of reasons for understanding differences the dissertation finds out and discussed in detail the generation ways and types of original words, derivation, and paronyms, two basic questions about the possibility to form a correct understanding of the etymological meaning. On this basis, the definition, connotation, nature and characteristics of the etymological meaning are studied, with emphasis on the dual connotation of etymological meaning and its fuzzy characteristic.Chapter 2 talks about the etymological meaning and significance of determining paronyms. After a brief review of history of setting criteria of paronyms, it focuses on the analysis of the determination of paronyms, describes the sememe analysis method to decide significance relations of paronyms, argues in detail about the advantages and disadvantages, and then points out that in the determination and analysis of paronyms, two problems, the criteria of meaning and analyzing significance relationship, should be paid attention to.Chapter 3 presents the interpretation and link of etymological meaning and paronyms in the practice. Through the examples, it discusses the importance of etymological meaning in interpretating paronyms, the influence of the totality, ambiguity and connectivity of etymological meaning on the interpretation and link of paronyms.Chapter 4 mentions the divergency in the conclusions on the interpretation of etymological meaning and paronyms. Five aspects, namely, the ambiguity, totality and connectivity of etymological meaning the determination of relations between derivative etymological meaning; extraction and summarization of etymological meaning; classification of links of paronyms;divergent conclusions of speculation of etymology; and rhyme etymology are evaluated to examine the divergent conclusions on the interpretation and link of etymological meaning and paronyms.The conclusion part summarizes the dissertation, main points, solutions. Furthermore, the demerits and problems that require improvement are mentioned in the end.
