Huang Kan’s Unpublished Manuscript on Phonology enbodies tens of phonology works by Huang Kan, which is compiled by Huang Zhuo. Most of these works are tables which are all original manuscripts and made by Huang Kan when he lived in Beijing and Wuchang. Thus, they are the important data for studying the thoughts of ancient Chinese phonology by Huang Kan.At present, there are no scholars studying on Huang Kan’s Unpublished Manuscript on Phonology. Selecting many kinds of tables which can reflect Huang’s ancient phonology thoughts from this book, we try to make sense of Huang’s phonological system and compare Huang’s ancient phonological system with those of others in order to inspect the origin of Huang’s ancient phonological system. The book and some related data reflect that Huang’s ancient phonological system doesn’t result from circular argument. The twenty three initials which are originally settled are the synthesis of the achievements on studies of ancient sound class by former worthies. Basing on this, Huang united the two initials of Yu (于) and Yu (喻) and formed the system of ancient twenty two initials. Inspired by Zhou Hanxun, Huang Kan considered the third-class initial of Oun and the fake fourth-class initials of Yu and Xie,which belonged to the twenty two ancient initials, as the initials Therefore, the system of nineteen ancient initials was formed. The study of ancient rhymes by Huang Kan is the process of mutual corroboration between types analysis and value research of ancient rhymes. Basing on seventeen type ancient rhymes by Duan Yucai and referring to the studies of Kong Guangsen, Jiang Yougao and Zhang Binglin, Huang Kan added eight types of entering tone and basically formed the system of twenty-eight types ancient rhymes. It’s the study idea on the type of ancient rhymes by Huang. In addition, taking the system of nineteen ancient initials as the standard and inspecting two hundred and six rhymes in Guangyun, Huang found that thirty-two rhymes including Ge can be only matched with Chinese ancient initials. Therefore, it can be speculated that these thirty two rhymes are ancient rhymes and ar formed the system of twenty-eight types rhymes by combining open and closed accent: It’s the achievement of study on the value of ancient rhymes by Huang Kan, and these twenty-eight types quite coincide with the results of the type research. The system of ancient initials by Huang Kan originates from the system of twenty ancient initials by Zhou Hanxun in Qing Dynasty. Meanwhile, the system of ancient rhymes by Huang directly originates from the two systems of twenty-three types ancient rhymes by Zhang Binglin and twenty-six types ancient rhymes by Liu Fenglu. Huang’s systems of ancient initials and rhymes have great significance on Zeng Yunqian and Qian Xuantong. Moreover, Huang’s ancient rhymes’system inspired Liu Ze to separate Xiao (You) and Su (Jue) and finally formed the system of twenty-nine types ancient rhymes.
