This paper focuses on Dong Qichang’s North and South Sects Theory and regards “ Huazhi”(essences of painting) in his “Rongtai Anthology ”(Rongtai is the courtesy name of Dong Qichang) as core text. Then this paper grasps several key words like Yichaozhiru, Qiyunshengdong, Weifa, Yanyun, Pingyuan, and Wenrenzhihua and combines three aspects: Dong’s thought orientation, essences of North and South Sects Theory and people’s acceptance of his thoughts to analyze why Dong Qichang’s school reduces to be the only force that pushes the inheritance of traditional Chinese landscape paintings forward during its degeneration process, thus reaches the conclusion that Dong’s thoughts is the reflection of sub‐branch of Neo‐Confucianism on paintings and cracks the crucial part of one problem that Qiyunshengdong, which Yichaozhiru serves as separation node, is one kind of Qilun in the shape of Xinxue.
