The tenth to fourteenth centuries were a relatively closed period in the history of Japan. On that historical stage, a massive Chinese culture import had gone and the influence of western civilizations had not yet arrived. During that time, the tradition of writing in Chinese character was maintained. In addition, Japanese produced a large number of Chinese language works. To regard the Chinese characters of the Japanese documents in tenth to fourteenth centuries as the research object, this paper studies on the system of Chinese character words and the rules of the process of language contact between Chinese and Japanese. Furthermore, it can provide some new data for the study of the history of Chinese vocabulary.The full text is composed of six chapters:The first chapter is the introduction part. This chapter includes three aspects: firstly, to clarify the conception of "Chinese Character Words" and get the overview of Chinese language works written by Japanese during the 10th-14th centuries; secondly, to elaborate the source of data and the research situation through classification; and thirdly, to introduce the visual angle and methods of research.The second chapter puts emphasis on the research value. The research not only enriches the study resource, but also benefits the study of the inherent law in Chinese character words. Moreover, it can contribute to the collation of ancient classics and the compilation of dictionaries.The third chapter aims to summarize the text characteristics of Chinese works in Japan. By means of analyzing the text feature, format and symbol, it makes a comprehensive understanding of Japanese tradition of manuscript which is distinct from the documents of China and Korea.The forth chapter mainly discusses the features of the sense of words. Based on the research of notional words and function words, we inquire into the influence of Japanese language environment on the meaning of Chinese character words. The fifth chapter insights into structural characteristics of Chinese character words in Japan. There are two ways to construct a new word, including recombining the Chinese morphemes and making their inherent morphemes into Chinese characters.The sixth chapter focuses on the era characteristics. By tracing to the source of Chinese character words, we put forwards the opinion that, before Song dynasty, Chinese vocabulary made an effect on Chinese character in Japanese mainly by "book transmission"; for another, while Japanese absorbing the new words or meanings of Song dynasty, the importance of Japanese monks who exchanged to China improved.Finally, the epilogue summarizes the research and prospects the related fields.
