Regional characteristics are a multi-level concept, normally referring to a type of geo-political, geo-economic and geo-cultural relationship. In this research, regional characteristics are referred to those formed by natural and cultural conditions, i.e. regional tea ceramic cultures such as Togei, Shigaraki Ceramic, Bizenyaki and Old Seto Ware. The research on the regional culture of Japanese tea ceramics facilitates a systematic understanding of regional cultural boundaries of Japanese tea ceramics.This research studies the regional characteristics of Japanese tea ceramics from three perspectives:1. It probes the development, formation factors, process and paradigm of Japanese tea culture as well as the developmental relationship between the form of tea culture and regional tea ceramics from the historical perspective. Japanese tea ceramics are suggested as supports for tea culture.2. It examines how tea ceramics produced in different regions meet the demands for special segments of the schools of Teaism based on the standards of “use” and “beauty” in the schools of Teaism. The primary condition of making craftwork is the reflections on purposes – when to use craftworks, where to use them, what tools are used, how to use them, why use them and who uses them3. It explores the characteristics and difference among regions in Japan from the perspective of the production of tea ceramics.Due to the difference of natural conditions and materials for creation, the techniques and methods used to create tea ceramics among regions are different – this can be found from the difference of regional tea ceramic works in Japan. Seeing from tea utensils for daily use to tea tool specially for Teaism culture as well as from material products to meet users’ needs to tea tools into which spiritual elements are integrated, it can be found that at different stages of historical and cultural development, tea ceramics produced in different regions meet the demands for different populations and ways of using tea ceramics...
