In the mid-late Ming Dynasty, there were a large number of anthology of Si-Liu (四六) appearing 50 kinds of which are still kept by now. This dissertation try to combine all-around with special study, macroscopical with microcosmic study, and do the study to the anthology of Si-Liu from the critical and philological angles.The first two chapters emphasis on descriptive and thus have an overall grasp of the state of Si-liu in the mid-late Ming Dynasty:the first chapter, on the basis of comprehensive survey, relegate these selections of the mid-late Ming Dynasty into three categories. the first is the selection which focuses on the style, similar to the traditional classical anthology and represented by the Si Liu Fa Hai selected by Wang Zhijian. The second pay great attention to entertainment feeling, such selection is obviously influenced by the essay’s trend of the mid-late Ming Dynasty, represented by the Si-Liu Canhua selected by Zhang mengze. The last one is the selection that emphasis on being a reference for the daily, such selections with the largest number is closely related to the popularity of Si-liu in mid-late Ming Dynasty, represented by the series of Che Shu Lou (车书楼) selected by Wang Shimao. This chapter discusses the above selections and has a comprehensive survey of the mid-late Ming Dynasty’s Book House industry’ characteristics and social conditions of the prevalence of books for everyday use, in order to have a more comprehensive grasp of the existence of Si-liu ’state in the mid-late Ming Dynasty.the second Chapter is based on the prose Compilers’ relevant discussions about the Si-liu in the mid-late Ming Dynasty, and combined with the outcomes of parallel criticism before Ming dynasty to examine the features and achievements of the article in the mid-late Ming Dynasty. Specifically it includes four parts:the election of Si-liu’s in the mid-late Ming Dynasty understanding of the value of Si-liu; the attitude of it; the discussion of its writing skills; and the criticism of it.The last two chapters emphasis on interpretation, intending to probe certain nature of Si-liu in the mid-late Ming Dynasty. The third chapter investigate the underlying reasons for the popularity of Si-liu in the mid-late Ming Dynasty according to the feature that most Si-liu’s selections in that period are selections of Qi (启). This chapter takes ceremonial features of Qi as the breakthrough point, it begins with tracing the origin of that feature and compares the characteristics of Qi in the Tang Dynasty with that in the Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, it discusses the historic mission of Qi from a macroscopic view, and points out the Qi of the mid-late Ming society’s negative effects to the culture at that time by combining the scholar’s discussion about Qi and the model of epistolary art, which are the two basic forms of classic books in the mid-late Ming Dynasty.Chapter four starts with certain kind selection in the mid-late Ming Dynasty that influenced by the essay, combines with the popularity of essay in the mid-late Ming Dynasty, to probe the Si-liu’s criticism come into being essay-style tendency. This chapter argues that in the mid-late Ming Dynasty, emerged a new literary aesthetic paradigm, which is the essay aesthetic paradigm, since then it produced a far-reaching social and cultural impact at that time and formed the late Ming unique "essay spirit ".in such an atmosphere, the Si-liu in the late Ming critics also have a tendency of essay-style.The so-called essay-style refers to the scholars, especially selectors, began to look closely at Si-liu, so as to provide a new perspective for Si-liu. This chapter through the comprehensive inspection of Si-liu’s anthology in the mid-late Ming Dynasty, parallel anthology and essay selections, to discuss the probe to the process of essay-style of Si-liu’s criticism in the mid-late Ming Dynasty.
