Research On Practical Value Of Linquan Gaozhi

Kuo Hsi is a "highly comprehensive" landscape painter in Chinese art history, as well as a court painter with the spirit and position of scholars during Xining and Yuanfeng period of North Song. First, he used excellent and exquisite painting techniques to make great contribution for the improvement and development of landscape painting. During his creation, he combined strengths from the north and south landscape paintings during Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty to create vivid, deep and vigorous huge landscape paintings integrated with Chinese ink. He had achieved mastery in Chinese painting, fully demonstrating the height of traditional Chinese painting. Meanwhile, in his theory of paintings, Linquan Gaozhi, he conducted comprehensive summarization and detailed analysis to the creation of landscape paintings theoretically. He elaborated on the value of landscape paintings and relationship between painters and paintings from his own creation experience and academic understanding as an excellent painting practitioner; conducted detailed and in-depth analysis and demonstration on the scenario creation, painting technique, space processing, layout and other aspects, and also stressed the importance of nurturing painter spirit, having a far-reaching impact on future art creators and theory researchers as a milestone work in the painting history of China.In past researches, because of lack of related documents and limited by obscure pictures and researcher’s academic directions, when it comes to such an important painter as Kuo Hsi, most scholars’ researches are focused on philosophical demonstration of Linquan Gaozhi, which means to use traditional Chinese philosophies like Confucianism and Taoism to explain the thoughts in landscape paintings by Kuo Hsi, while few researches are conducted to closely relate Linquan Gaozhi to the painter, thus neglecting the abundant content conveyed by Chinese painting. To fully explore and absorb the practical value and guiding role of Linquan Gaozhi to future creation of landscape paintings, and contribute more direct and understanding to landscape painting methods of Kuo Hsi, this paper conducts multiple classification and analysis to Linquan Gaozhi, uses related creation factor and landscape type as demonstration unit, and combines analysis on detailed painting techniques and rules of creation, so as to analyze his painting features and the processing method of various painting relationship; combines his theoretical thoughts and descriptions in past related documents, and find intuitive illustrations for related demonstration works. It also takes the inheritance of painting style of Li Cheng and related creation as example, and further demonstrate the practical utilization and verification of Linquan Gaozhi representing the painter’s thoughts, which is the most permanent practical value to future painters.
