The Study Of Flowing Sentences In Modern Chinese

Using the three dimensions of the grammatics as the framework, and in the light of cognitive linguistics, systemic-functional linguistics and discourse linguistics, this thesis studies the grammatic, semantics and discourse of flowing sentences in modern Chinese, which reveals the flowing sentences’ internal rules under the parataxis characteristic, and explaines the features of semantic-cognitive, discourse-function and language types.Chapter 1 elaborates the reason of choosing this topic, importance of the topic, content and methodology of the research work, and the theoretical basis of the research.Chapter 2 is the literature overview. It first summarizes the three developing phases of the compound sentence and their achievements, analyzes the current compound sentence research status, and then raises the most concerned questions. It then summarizes achievements in the research work of the flow sentences and analyzes the deficiencies from the four aspects of the characteristics, cate-gories, relationships between the clauses, and the English-Chinese translation.Chapter 3 defines and illustrates the characteristics of the flowing sentences. Based upon the research achievements by other researchers in the past, this chapter redefines the connotation and the extended meanings of flowing sentences. It focuses on the characteristics, compared the differences between the flowing sentences and the marked complex sentences, the flowing sentences and the parataxis sentences.Chapter 4 analyzes the syntactic structure of the flowing sentences. Through the vast data, it categorizes the connection types, summarizes the structure types in the connection between clauses in them. It focuses on the component of the subject of the clauses, and illustrates the effects of the subject composition made in them.Chapter 5 analyzes the flowing sentences from semantic aspect. It first categorizes the types of the sentence’s meaning, with the meaning’s relationship of the individual clauses in the flowing sentences. It then defines the the flowing sentences with coordinate compound sentence, successive compound sentence, interpretative compound sentence and causative compound sentence. Finally it discusses the semantic relevance’s elements in the individual clauses from semantic correlation.Chapter 6 analyzes the flow sentences from cognitive aspect. First, utilizing the analytical methods in cognitive linguistics, it summrises the common language sequence of clauses through its mashalling sequence and principle, then gets the conclusion on the perceiving principles of the language massalling. Second, applying the iconicity, the figure-ground and ICM principles in cognitive linguistics, elaborates the internal perceiving mechanism which is hidden in the dominant sentences, proves the underlying regularity in them.Chaper 7 is the discourses analysis aspect, utilizing analytical methods with topic, topic chain, information’s structures and the modeles of topic progression in discourse linguistics, it first discusses the methods of discourse cohesion, the topic types, the topic roles and its selection principles; and then anlyzes the linkage types of the topic chains of the clause. Emphasises are laid on the driving models of the topic.Chapter 8 analyzes the flow sentences from typological aspect. From the characteristics of the isolating language and the modes of thinking in Chinese, explaines the reason why the the flowing sentences has distincitive characterics in various sentence patterns in Chinese.Chapter 9 is the conclusion, reviews the research achievements of the thesis and points out the future research design.Based upon the linguistic facts, the features of Flowing Sentences are studied from the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic. The research framework of Studying F.S has been built. Besides the parataxis feature, the hygotaxis feature has been found. It proves that incomplete SV sentences, and non-SV sentences, have the feature of parataxis after thougly studying the connection type of FS. Applying the semantic connectionism, the coherent devices and topic chains of discourse, it clearly states the deeper feature of hypotaxis. Eight cognitive mechanism sequences of FS. have been summarized. By applying ICM, Iconicity and the figure-ground theory, the deeper cognitive mechanism have been analyzed.In summary, this thesis contains both micro analysis and macro expiorations. There are detailed explanations as well as descriptions of language facts. There are the inheritations to the achivements by other researchers in the past as well as the deep thinkings of the author. Based on the sufficient decription on the truth face of the flow sentences, and it to excavate its internal regularity, elaborates its cognitive perceiving mechanism, and prompts its discourse value.
