Poems in Shanxi Province are an essential part of the literature in Qing Dynasty and also an indispensable stage in the development of poetry of Shanxi Province. Regional culture in Shanxi Province is the background of this thesis. And poets of Shanxi Province in Qing Dynasty are its subjects. Based on a detailed research of original document, this thesis aims to provide an outline of the development history of poetry in that period and to explore its relationship with poetry in other regions. The thesis is also to reveal the development pattern of poetry in Shanxi Province. With an analysis of the political economy and cultural thought in different periods, the article is to show the characteristics of poetry and to understand the causes of the special quality. What’s more, as a regional poetry, poetry in Shanxi Province shows obvious regional features and a general decrease from the south to the north in spatial distributionIn the whole Qing Dynasty appeared thousands of poets and their poems in Shanxi Province. The development of poetry is mainly divided into three stages. And this thesis consists of five parts. The introduction is a statement of the subject and its research status and methods. It also gives a definition of the subject poets,poetry and other things related to the topic.Chapter one describes the culture and geographical characteristics of Shanxi Province and provides the background of poetry in Qing Dynasty. It also gives an analysis of the culture and geographical characteristics, the imperial examinations and culture of Qing Dynasty and the history of poetry in Shanxi Province. This chapter covers the historic and regional causes which influence the development of poetry in Shanxi Province and the internal factors of poetry development. This chapter lays foundations for further research.Chapter two is a summary of poetry of Shanxi Province in Qing Dynasty. This chapter surveys the development of poetry from a diachronic viewpoint and its regional distribution. It tries to depict the route of poetry development in Shanxi Province. Actually, poems in Shanxi Province do not only differ in different parts of the province, but also have their special regional characters as a whole.Chapter three introduces Shanxi poetry in early Qing Dynasty. In this chapter, poets selected are Fu Shan, Cheng Kangzhuang, Wu Wen and Chen Tingjing, who fall into two groups. Poems in the former group mainly reflect the change of dynasties and the psychology of people. Poems in the latter praise the new dynasty and describe the beautiful scenery. Fu Shan and Chen Tingjing are the pioneers of the poetic circle in this period. The poetic style also changes. Poem writing booms. But with different background, poets’ psychology varies. The change of poetic style begins comparatively late and moves rapidly. The poetry shows its special featuresChapter four is about poetry of Shanxi Province in the middle of Qing Dynasty. Although the influence of poets is not that outstanding, poems with various themes emerge in large numbers. Their regional character is also obvious. Poetry consciousness, regional poem groups and poetic theory also appear. Anyhow, it’s a great advance. Regional poetry is recorded and published in large numbers. Poems in this period mainly describe the beautiful landscape and express personal feelings. However, poem writing attaches importance to its forms and lacks contents. Li Luanxuan, He Daosheng, Zhang Jin and Yan Junshou are the representatives. The styles of their poems are different. But because these poets are almost from the bottom of the society, none of them is a great master in Qing Dynasty.Chapter five is a research of poetry in late Qing Dynasty. The famous poems in this period are Qi Junzao, Xu Jiyu, Feng Zhiyi, Dong Wenhuan, Feng Wanlin and Yang Shenxiu. This chapter analyses the changes of poetic styles. Actually, poetry in this period is closely related to the society and shows obvious characteristics of the times. More narrative poems with knowledge emerge. Both internal and external interactions move rapidly, which promotes the prosperity of poetry writing.The conclusion gives a summary of poem development from three aspects, which are the process of poem growth, features of poem writing and regional distribution of poems. This part is to sum up the status and influences of poetry in Shanxi Province.
