A Study On The Ancient Ecological Environment And Culture Of Quang Nam, Vietnam

This research focus on the ancient ecological environment and culture of Quang Nam of Vietnam (now Quang Nam province and Da Nang city) with the environmental history and cultural ecology’s new perspective. According to the numerous archaeological achievements confirmed, Quang Nam history including three stages:there are about 5000 years ago to the 2nd century AD, during the prehistoric period; started the 2nd century to the 15th century during Champa kingdom period; from the 15th century to the 19th century during Nguyen Lords and Nguyen Dynasty period. Based on this new research perspective and the research viewpoint, in addition to the introduction and the conclusion, this paper is divided into six chapters:The first chapter highlights the Quang Nam is a region with a long history and culture, and the development of its history and culture has spent a tortuous process. As a core area of the Coast Central Vietnam, Quang Nam region constantly has the economy was quite developed; take the Thu Bon river’s middle and lower reaches valley for main part, its regional and inter-regional interactions in terms of economic development, cultural exchanges played an important role. As a result, Quang Nam has become a multi ethnic coexistence, the culture of different ethnic groups unceasing compatible in different time and space, and formed a multicultural region.The second chapter describes of Quang Nam region’s the formation of topography and geomorphology, the changes of the terrain of mountains and expanse of waters, the changes of the climate and their characteristics. Because of directly affected by many factors as terrain’s variety, geographical position’s maritime and Asian tropical monsoon climate, Quang Nam region took the characteristics of Southeast Asia, Coast Central Vietnam areas’natural environment. In this regard, in a certain extent, it could be said that Quang Nam region by the way of a representative region on these large scale of Southeast Asia, Central Vietnam.The third chapter focuses on the changes of ancient biological and mineral of Quang Nam region. From the point of view of the changes of animals plants, minerals and their characteristics and representation in Quang Nam region, the type of animals, plants, mineral’s in this region were mainly adapted the tropical climate, and their basic types has changed very little through time. This region not only has the rich and diverse characteristics of Southeast Asia and Vietnam’s animals, plants ecological community and minerals’ resources, but also it has unique and rare ones.The fourth chapter is mainly through the study:from the 17th century to the 19th century’s ancient books and other historical materials to explore the natural environment disasters of Quang Nam region. The Quang Nam people has suffered including floods, wind damage, drought, disease, malaria, beast and other disasters. Natural environment disasters have serious consequences for people’s life and their production activities. In comparison with other parts of the Central Vietnam region, Quang Nam should be subjected to natural disasters, especially hurricanes, floods were the most typical ones. Facing to these natural disasters occur frequently, Quang Nam region’s people and royal courts have unique response measures.The fifth chapter focuses on the relationship between Quang Nam people and the natural environment, promptly the man-land relationship. In conclusion, the ancient Bau Du people and Sa Huynh people’s ecological model, Champa kingdom period’s ecological cultural model, and Nguyen Lord, Nguyen dynasty period Quang Nam people’s geo-economic, geo-cultural and geo-political aspects are prominent display Quang Nam people have a unique views of ecological environment. In addition, the interactive relationship of Quang Nam people and the natural environment by material life as natural resource extraction, reclamation and water conservancy, basic necessities of life and spiritual life as phonological knowledge, awareness of the maritime consciousness, geomantic omen concepts, folk beliefs were more vividly reflected.The sixth chapter focuses on the characteristics of the ancient ecological culture and the development ecological culture in the modern Quang Nam region. Quang Nam region’s ecological and cultural characteristics have a unique dialect and people personality, with geographical positon’s advantage and the axis position on geographical relations, dense on tropical rice culture and maritime consciousness, multivariate, compatible and openness, prominently showing the regional cultural, forming a unique cultural unit. Nowadays, Quang Nam & Da Nang region on the way of the development, facing to quite serious ecological and environmental problems, historical events, from the preliminary research result of this paper is to get some training and enlightenment.In briefly, this paper explores the ecological environment and culture in Quang Nam region, in essence, it is a new perspective on the old problems of Quang Nam’s history and culture. For the first time from a new point of view and a new visual angle of study, adopted the variety of historical material to research Quang Nam history and culture, the preliminary research results could make a contribution for two new research fields such as environmental history, the cultural ecology’s promoting and developing with greater range in the future of Vietnam.
