Abstract:Andy Warhol is known as one of the art world’s most famous characters, who is pop art’s advocates and leader, and the greatest impact on pop art artist as well. Andy Warhol’s extremely variety of works and his great creativity as artist can only be compared to Picasso in the 20th Century art world.Andy Warhol’s art works cover many forms of media, among which the most energy he cost and most far-reaching achievements he got is the art of painting and film that represent image art. So that the Americans, "if not to say that Andy is a pop artist, will say that he is an underground filmmaker." And seen from the expansion concept of art and the pop art’s purpose, everything he did belongs to the field of Pop Art. His career in pop art is wandering between these two careers to achieve his ultimate goal. The photography, as a link between painting and film, also plays a very important part in the formation and development of Andy Warhol’s artistic concept.Whether it is in the development of art history, or in Andy Warhol’s image art, the Axis of painting-photography-film undoubtedly has great influence on the development of the concepts of art and philosophy; from Benjamin to Bazin, from Danto to Carroll, Andy Warhol, as a whimsy "Philosopher out of Artist", also has great influence on the development of art practice and theory.This dissertation, with Andy Warhol’s artwork as carrier, attempts to systematically elucidate the graphic arts and imaging characteristics of art and their respective mutual ties through classification and formal analysis techniques, so as to provide a new perspective on the understanding of Andy Warhol’s artistic thought.Specifically, this study will set Warhol back to the American cultural environment in 1950s and 1960s to analyze his artistic characteristics by studying the evolution of values, media, art, philosophy and social activities at that time.The first chapter tries to comb the art practice of Andy Warhol mainly in accordance with their image media. We can divided his practice into five stages, that are, exploration period of image, commercial image period, pop image period, experimental image period, commercial and returning image period. According to the analysis and interpretation of art critics and Warhol himself on his works to capture the content and creating motivation of him in each period, so as to got a holistic understanding on his image art, and lay the foundation for analysis in later chapters.Issues to be discussed in the second chapter is the impact of Andy Warhol’s art background, and from industrial civilization to explore the impact of social, public and popular culture, when American pop art and the development of the late avant-garde films cast influence on Andy Warhol’s arts. And all of these are in closely relation to the formation and development of artistic concept of Andy Warhol.Chapters third and fourth are the key part of this dissertation, through the contrast structure, tries to analysis the theme and form of manipulation of traits in Andy Warhol’s image art, and discuss the Mixed media, theme popularity and image replication issues in Warhol’s works; so as to lead to the fifth chapter in which characteristics are summarized for Andy Warhol’s art, that is, image replication of popular culture, repeating images, mechanization and anonymity and blending of business and art.In addition, a translation of related dairies on Warhol’s visiting in China in 1982 provide a new perspective on comprehensive understanding of his works.Also, due to the enormous influence and Popularity of Andy Warhol’s image style, a translation on the article of Fred Showker, Which is "Photoshop for the Andy Warhol Style" will allow us a more intuitive understanding on Andy Warhol’s artistic language.
