Research On The Luo Genze’s History Of Literature Criticism

The thesis mainly researches on Luo Genze’s History of Literature Criticism, comprehensively discussing it from many aspects, for example the academic principles, collecting material, the method of description and explanation, literary concept, historical viewpoint of criticism, Dragon-Carving and the Literary Mind, the classical article movement in Tang, the poetry talk in Song and the adjustment in 1950 s, etc. It also studies how the History of Chinese Literature Criticism occurred as a discipline and book style, from the consciousness of literature criticism, the codification of the History of Chinese Literature, the influence of “Rearranging the National Heritage” and Ling Mu’s History of Chinese Poetry to the books of criticism history, early lessons and handouts, etc.The main issues related to the thesis are discussed from the following three aspects. Firstly, back to the historical context, search for the original documents in the Period of the Republic of China, historically show the complex process of occurrence of criticism history and the true face of Luo Genze’s History of Literature Criticism, analyze the motivation and process of the early scholars(such as Chen Zhongfan, Guo Shaoyu, Zhu Dongrun, Fang Xiaoyue, Li Changzhi, etc) studying the criticism history, and restore the existence of criticism history as a discipline in the half century. Secondly, reflect on the academic mode of measuring the traditional criticism of poems and articles with the standards of Western literature criticism, and the historical research paradigm of arranging ancient literature criticism with the concept of modern literature and history to write a systematic history of literature criticism, and survey the tortuous mentality of modern scholars’ selecting between the ancient, modern, Chinese and Western culture. Thirdly, restate the research purposes of early authors of criticism history that is "to prove literary history", especially Luo Genze’s academic pursuits of seeking the truth of history, as well as the close relationship between criticism history and literary history, discuss the purpose and method of ancient literary theory research. These issues are of great significance in re-writing the history of literature criticism, the modern transformation of ancient literature theory, and construction of modern academic history.Based on the above three points, through understanding and reflecting the senior scholars’ research about the criticism history, the paper holds that it is difficult to understand true features of the traditional criticism of poems and articles by the concepts of Western "literary criticism" and modern "literature". The study of the criticism history should be based on the principle of historicism, to seek truth as the highest standard and its purpose being diversification. To contribute the construction of contemporary literary theory is only one of the tasks and should not be the sole or even the highest pursuit. To restore the true colors of ancient literary theory is the purpose in itself and to contribute in understanding the literature history, intellectual history or cultural history is its proper meaning.
