The research on archaeological cultures of the midstream region of the Yangtze River in the Western Zhou Dynasty is a huge mother project. Above all, the research on framework and systems (to fix the characteristics, categories and space-time range of every remains) is basic and exigency. Based on the research on both the pottery and bronze vessels of the midstream region of the Yangtze River in the Western Zhou Dynasty, this text makes corresponding analysis on two systems an finally get the framework and system of the whole midstream region of the Yangtze River in the Western Zhou Dynasty. The framework of this text is as follows:Introduction:the text elaborate the significance of the task, review the archaeological discovery and past research and make explanations on new concepts on the research range, train of thought and methods of this text. The chapter one:the summarization on the culture in the time of Shang Dynasty. The text separates the remains into the typical Shang culture and the local culture, summarizes the cultural remains from the upper layer of Erligangi(二里冈)culture to the early period of Yinxu(殷墟)culture of the midstream region of the Yangtze River and gets the control range of the Shang culture. The unbalanced development of the local cultures after the withdrawing of the typical Shang culture makes the structure before the entering of the typical Zhou culture. It is also matting for the follow discussion on the archaeological cultures in the Western Zhou Dynasty. The chapter two:research on classification and sequence of the remains in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Based on the features of the pottery, the text classifies different remains. Based on the pedigree of the pottery, the text makes discussions on grouping, period, cultural appearance and characteristics of different remains and establishes the time sequences in several small areas. Comparing with the sequences, the text establishes the space-time framework of archaeological cultures in the Western Zhou Dynasty and gets the common features in the cultural development among different areas that they all have the systems of typical Shang culture (or its influences), local culture and typical Zhou culture. The chapter three:discussions on relations between several archaeological cultures. The text separates the remains into two systems of the typical Zhou culture and the untypical Zhou culture, because of the space-time framework research. Then the text discusses the relations between the cultural remains of the untypical Zhou culture and separates the remains into several culture circles, big or small, based on the relations of the pottery. The text discusses the sub-cultures under the system of the typical Zhou culture, the time that they get into the different area and the different conforming-modes they have confronting the local cultures. At last, the text discusses the relations between the typical Zhou culture and the untypical Zhou culture, including the two kinds as follows:to conform or to be conformed, in parallel development or in mutual influence. The chapter four:discussions on bronzes in the Western Zhou Dynasty. The text summarizes the discovery of the bronze in the Western Zhou Dynasty at first, and then makes research on the combinations, structure and emblazonry of the bronze of the typical unit with thinking about inscriptions. Considering the characteristics and date sequence, we separate the bronze vessels into two parts and three groups that Part I Group A is the Shang system bronzes attaching importance to sacrificial vessels, Part A Group B is the Shang system bronzes attaching importance to both sacrificial vessels and musical instruments and PartⅡis the Zhou system bronze vessels, moreover, we fix out the space-time framework of their own and relations and matching between the two parts of bronzes and the archaeological cultures. The chapter five:the related discussions. The chapter summarizes the theory and methods to establish the system of frameworks. Then we research the control area of Shang and Western Zhou Dynasty and differences between their systems. We contrast them and point at the root cause is their different operating strategies. We study at the replace process of cultural standard of the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, then sum up the plan and control of the Western Zhou Dynasty. In the process of it, we discuss sorts of problems from the archaeological angle, such as the Shang and Western Zhou Dynasty’s efforts of copper mine in southeast of Hubei Province, the problem of adherents of Shang Dynasty, the early Chu culture, E nation((鄂国)of Western Zhou period, deign lands of many Ji-s in north of the Han River(汉阳诸姬),etc. Then we come up with some new ideas. Conclusion:the text summarizes the three achievements below:the new ideas on theory and methods, establishment on basic frameworks and researches on academic problems. The text points out the unsolved problems and looks forward to the follow-up studies.
