Enduring peace is an everlasting dream for mankind. However, mankind’s path of pursuingpeace, unlike that of fighting wars, has barely been evidently marked and carefully recorded. Therefore, there is no wonder that as late as in the mid-20thcentury when the pursuing, making, promoting and maintaining of peace began to gain global momentum, and accordingly peace anddevelopment became the theme of modern era. It was from that period that the existing state ofpeace for contemporary China actually originated and the theory of peace has come into shape andgrows increasingly influential. The dissertation attempts to study contemporary China’s theory of peace in the context ofhistorical development of mankind and the evolution of international structure. From theperspective and standpoint of Marxism and by adopting Marxist approaches, the dissertationsystematically discusses the development and theoretical system of contemporary China’s theoryof peace, the relationship between the contemporary China’s peace and the world peace as well asthe prospects for the development of China’s theory of peace, with the conclusion that China mustadhere to the path of peace with Chinese characteristics and make its due contribution to thelasting peace and common prosperity of the world. With little reference of literature on the history of world peace, the dissertation’s analysis onhuman peace process is conducted from the perspective and standpoint of Marxism and throughadopting Marxist approaches, pointing out the three phases of human peace development:realizing peace in the way of “conquering and assimilation” in the ancient time; making peace of“balance-hegemony” by peaceful treaties in the modern times; and making and activelymaintaining enduring peace by peaceful forces in the current era. Thus, the historical position ofcontemporary China’s peace issues is defined. The dissertation also systematically reviews the development of the theory of peace since thebirth of Marxism and focuses especially on the theory of peace during the process of Marxismlocalization in China, which mainly includes the theories and remarks concerning peace by theChinese leaders such as Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping,Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and Xi jinping. Inaddition, with a reference to their respective historical background, the dissertation explains themajor development clues and focuses of the contemporary China’s theory of peace in differenthistorical periods.Based on the above research and analyses, the dissertation attempts to systemize the contemporary China’s theory of peace by conducting a comprehensive research including itshistorical orientation, world position, background of times, nature and characteristics, majorstructure and code of conduct, which almost covers all the elements of the contemporary China’stheory of peace. In addition, the dissertation attaches importance to study the contemporary China’s theory ofpeace from a global perspective. By putting the Chinese peace issues into the whole picture ofglobal peace, the dissertation compares China’s peace with the world peace, summarizes thecontribution of China’s peace to the world peace, through the angle of both sides and theinteraction with each other. The dissertation attempts to study the nature through its phenomenonand echo with the academic trends on world peace as well as China’s peace, with an approach ofcombining the profoundness in theory and the objectivity in practice. In conclusion, peace in contemporary China results from both human progress and theconsistent strive of Chinese people, with the two serving as both cause and effect to each other.Being both a socialist theory of peace and a theory of peace with Chinese characteristics, thecontemporary China’s theory of peace is a localized Marxist peace theory. In the future, Chinashould further enrich and develop its theory of peace and stick to the path of peaceful development,by both seizing the opportunity provided by the world and presenting chances for lasting peaceand common prosperity to the whole world.
