Media literacy education is to guide the audience to understand correctly and enjoyconstructively the resources of mass communication, through this kind of education, tomake audience have a healthy media criticism, for leveraging media resources to improvethemselves and to participate in social development. In modern times, the necessity andurgency of media literacy education in primary and secondary schools become increasinglyprominent. The advance and development of media literacy education in American schoolswill provide useful inspiration for the development of our primary and secondary medialiteracy education.This study was carried out to show the American media literacy education status,including the background of media literacy education in the United States to carry out, thestage of development, the mode, the implementation of the basic concept, the theoreticalbasis and methods which show the American primary and secondary media literacy educationlook, and then through the case study on primary and secondary media literacy education inTexas, one continent of the United States, to show the perspective of primary and secondarymedia literacy education. Finally, with reference to reflect the problems of media literacyeducation in the United States, the study will analyse the substance of the primary andsecondary media literacy education further more.The first part is introduction, which mainly talks about the origin of this thesis, the basicidea of the research questions and significance, research methods, literature review and thetrain of thought. Introduction plays the role of planning and commanding the study of theentire thesis writing, therefore, to some extent, the general introduction actually essay writingpart.The second part is the main part of the thesis, divided into six chapters.The main content of the first chapter is to elaborate the development of media literacyeducation in the world and its contemporary trends. First, media literacy education in thepresent study is analysed and the basic connotation is defined, and it’s very valuable to carryout for contemporary social and individuals. Secondly, the development of media literacyeducation in the world and its overall trends is analysed and interpreted. Last, to introduce thedevelopment of the primary and secondary media literacy education in our country that is thefoundation to analyse the media literacy education in the United States.The second chapter of the thesis analyzes the development and evolution of medialiteracy education in American schools, which include the stages of the development of medialiteracy education in American schools, the concept and the traits of media literacy education in different stages, and the implementation of American schools.The third chapter of the thesis is mainly theoretical foundation of American primary andsecondary media literacy education. Specifically, these theories includes bullet theory andcultivation theory, critical theory and media ecology theory, and how these theories affectAmerican primary and secondary media literacy education. In addition, this chapter discussesthe assessment on media literacy education which is8ideas and18principles.The fourth chapter mainly analyzes the implementation of media literacy education inAmerica. The concrete content includes: implementation idea of media literacy education, thechange of media literacy education standards, the evaluation standards of media literacyeducation, and the12kinds basic method used in media literacy education of primary andsecondary schools.The fifth chapter analyzes one case of media literacy education in the United States, thestate of Texas’, Specifically, such as the establishment of media literacy education standardsin Texas schools, the courses of change, the impact factors, as well as the comparison of theold and new standards. And how the state trains and develops the media literacy educationteachers, what are the specific details of curriculum implementation and the results of the testand assessment and so on.The sixth chapter summarizes and reflects the primary and secondary media literacyeducation in the United States and continues to put forward my own thinking, including theanalyzing and summarizing the characteristics of media literacy education in Americanschools, the development experiences, the obstacles faced and making recommendations forimprovement of the media literacy education.The last part of this thesis is conclusion. The viewpoint of this study is summarized withthe previous analysis, thinking about the problems and follow-up study of this study. China’sprimary and secondary media literacy education could learn useful experiences from thedevelopment of media literacy education in the United States, so that proposals are putforward on the development of the concept of media literacy education.
