Theories And Practices Of Sports Human Settlements

This dissertation,based on the case study of the Olympic Garden,using theories of spacial sociology,for the development of human sports settlements in China,puts forward a theoretic framework of sports human settlements and recommends a new model and path for "exercise for everyone" initiative.1.Sports human settlements,as a combination of all elements which are necessary for sports activities in a community,is essentially a spacial existence which can provide sports functions for the human settlements.Sports human settlements is composed of sports infrastructure,sports cultural element and sports organizational element.2.Planning and construction of sports human settlements requires balancing sports facilities with infrastructure in a community.Sports infrastructure in a community includes greenland,square,roads,parking lots etc in a community.Sports facilities installed in a community can improve the quality of local people’s life and sports human settlements can help formulate a proactive,healthy cultural theme for life in the community.Sports human settlements can become popular through the promotion of market mechanism.Sports human settlements is an institutional innovation for the "exercise for everyone" initiative.3.The concept of sports human settlement should be promoted widely and extensively.Lack of understanding of the notion of sports human settlements and lack of public policy support for sports human settlements are problems which hinders the development sports human settlements.The concept should be borrowed in the construction of new communities and in the renovation of old communities.4.The Olympic Garden can serve as a model for sports human settlements and it can be a showcase for policy makers.China sports industrial group,which had built the Olympic Garden,embodied an active and healthy life attitude into the design, planning,development,operation and maintenance of the Olympic Garden and had promoted a "scientific exercise,healthy life" model for community inhabitants.The Olympic Garden can serve as a model for developing sports human settlements.The China sports industrial group,which is the largest public listed company in the sports facility sector,has created a roadmap for promoting the "exercise for everyone" initiative via market mechanism. This dissertation makes the following proposals:to improve the current "Guidelines for Construction Land of Sports Facilities in Cities",and take into consideration of all factors related to the construction of sports human settlements in cities in order to ensure the execution of the "exercise for everyone" initiative.The factors include: service accessability of sports facilities in a community for the local people,land size and land quality,operating machanism,government regulations etc.To enact "Regulations for Sports Facilities Planning in Cities" to integrate sports development with city construction and planning.To promote sports facilities construction land planning initiative across the country,and use market mechanism to solve the construction fund.In densely populated areas,to integrate sports buildings with commercial buildings,to employ both the government’s visible hand and the market’s invisible hand to enhance the sustainability of sports human settlements.
