How does the China Modern Design happened and developed? This is a focal point of Chinese design history and also a relatively weak research area. This paper attempts to explore the modern consumption in the areas of Chinese business in the early20th. And in this paper, the author taking Yong an Department Store in Shanghai as an example, and focuses on consumer modernity and its formation process on the Chinese Modern Design, as well as their interactions and relationships, so as to provides a new explanation for the occurrence and development of China’s modern design.This paper can be divided into four chapters. The first chapter briefly states the background of study and the meaning and then gives us the comprehensive review and analysis of the relevant research literature, especially for the definition about the concept and connotation of "consumption modernity " and "modern design ". The second chapter analyzes the transformation and design sprout of Chinese domestic consumption in the early20th century. This chapter describes the dairy consumption of Shanghai residents living conditions before the advent of large-scale retail in China. Meanwhile, the chapter explores the transformation of consumption caused by the foreign goods input and the promotion the process of domestic products designed budding. The third chapter focuses on parsing the emergence of large-scale Chinese retail bring the process of constructing a modern concept of consumption. And take Shanghai Yong an Company issued118"Yongan Monthly" for clues, interpret the commercial capital and intellectual elite conspiracy, build methods and pattern of the core elements of modern consumer in the concept level. This chapter found that, by virtue of big business ambition and commercial instincts, to use cultural means and the influence of "Yongan Monthly", Shanghai Yongan create a group of fashionable ideas of modern life values, which include health, safety, mechanical, scientific, stylish, comfortable, etc. And through this consumption areas ideological construct, Yongan has the right to speak the definition of modern lifestyle. This modern concept of consumption that be constructed out, is the core values of modern design in China. The new concept of consumption, as a driving force, provides an important source of ideas and innovation leads for China’s modern design. The fourth chapter is the core of the paper, and it focus on the influence of Chinese consumer modernity characteristic on the design in the early20th century. For example, through a large number of historical data to tease out that Yong an in operation and management, marketing and advertising, design and production reveal a modern features. On this basis, the paper extracted from the consumer department of modern Chinese modernity performance, and they are trading of consumer goods and mass consumption environment of organic and visualization, the role of consumers and de-localization, standardization and consumer services specialization, diversification of consumer demand and symbolic. These modern characteristics, intrinsic influences the face of Chinese modern design and trends, and in the external relations would reflect the reality of the collision and conflict between tradition and modernity, East and West, in the early20th century Chinese society. Design as an important way to reconcile the relationship between the state of society survival and the commodity culture. It not only expands the space of survival and development, but also leaves traces etched in the annals of creation.This article expands design history from the perspective of micro-history, and perspectives the expand consumer characteristics of modernity under different contextual relationships, and reveals consumer modernity’s impact on Chinese modern design. This article provides a new perspective for exploring the power and mode of modern design in China’s development and has an important theoretical significance and value.
