Disadvantaged groups address terms is an important part of Chinese appellation system, but for a long time, the research of it has not been brought to academia’s attention due to various factors, and the research is mostly sporadic and surface. Contemporarily, as governments and the mass paying more attention to disadvantaged groups, their research is of greater social value and cultural significance.This paper consists of six chapters, with main content as follows:Introduction. This chapter elaborates the origin of this topic, analyses the concept of disadvantaged groups and the definition and diction standard of disadvantaged groups address terms. Besides, the research status of disadvantaged groups address terms both at home and abroad is introduced. This chapter also explains the adopted research method in this paper.Chapter1:Classification of disadvantaged groups in contemporary China. This chapter classifies and researches the address terms according to four aspects of disadvantaged groups in contemporary China, namely reference, function, application domain and semantic coloring, thus making a summary of the various situations and typical examples of disadvantaged groups address terms.Chapter2:The form analysis of disadvantaged groups address terms in contemporary China. This chapter analyzes the form categories of disadvantaged groups address terms in contemporary China according to their phonetic forms and structural styles.Chapter3:The historical evolution of the disadvantaged groups address terms. This chapter analyzes the historical evolution of disadvantaged groups address diction and its subsystem from diachronic and synchronic perspectives, and then summarizes the evolvement rule of the meaning scope and emotional coloring of the address terms, as well as the general direction of the subsystem’s evolution, i.e. from complicated to simple, from clear to vague, and from impoliteness and barbarism to politeness and harmony.Chapter4:The cultural features of disadvantaged groups address terms. Based on the formation and development of disadvantaged groups address terms, we summarize the cultural features of disadvantaged groups address terms from three aspects, namely the cultural features reflected by structures of disadvantaged groups address terms; the cultural spirit embodied in the usage of disadvantaged groups address terms, and the cultural factors reflected by the evolution of disadvantaged groups address terms.Chapter5:Conclusion. This chapter summarizes the main conclusions and innovations of this paper. Beside, the deficiencies in this study and further efforts are concluded.
