Analyzing The Communicative Functions Of Address Forms Through The Novel Choose

Address forms play an important part in people's daily communication,which are the first information delivered to the communicator.The use of address forms is the integration of linguistic symbols and many factors such as social cultures,pragmatics and psychology.Only by checking and analyzing the address forms from various perspectives can the characters of the address forms be exposed and can they be understand correctly and used appropriately.Based on the definition and classification of address forms,this dissertation analyzes the communicative functions of address forms and the factors which affect the usage of address forms combining with discourse analysis.The essay falls into five parts.The first chapter defines the connotation of address forms.It points out that the address forms under study are those used when people greet each other in face, and summarizes the predecessors' correlation researches.The second chapter classifies the address forms system with a new standard,that is,they are classified into kinship address forms and social address forms according to the relationship between the individuals.The third chapter uses the famous literary work Choose as an example and analyzes the communicative functions of address forms in detail.It shows that address forms have the following functions:the function of identifying speech of objector;the function of expressing the speaker's emotion;the function of indicating the status of both sides of communicators;the function of expressing the values of the speaker;the function of arousing the attention of the audiences;the function of illocutionary act.The fourth chapter explores the factors which affect the usage of address forms,that is,the effect of different contexts,the effect of kinships and social relations,the effect of the difference between the two communicators' status.In the final part,the author sums up the full text and points out the study of address forms should be put into the process of speaking.Only considering the social and cultural context can we make sure when and where and how to use the address forms and the aim of interaction can be obtained.
