The thought of Ritual is a kind of theory, which is taken a rational understanding of the nature and the value of’the ritual’as its core. The thought of Ritual also includes the significance of the etiquette system and the value of the classic of ritual. The formation of the thought of Ritual by Zhu Xi, which was not only benefits from the historical origins of the traditional thought of ritual by Confucian, but also by the reality of the impact of the Song Dynasty social and political development. The New Confucianism effects Zhu Xi’s research on rituals also. The topic of this paper is the formation of the thought of Ritual by Zhu Xi.The traditional thought of ritual by Confucian has a unique path. Sacrifice with a big significance in the developing of the ancient Chinese Civilization. Then in the period of Western Zhou Dynasty, keep social order was through by the etiquette system. But, when the etiquette system was broken, Confucian philosophers began to academic study of the nature and the value of’the ritual’. And in the period of Han Dynasty,’Yi Li’,’Li Ji’and’Zhou Li’ was established as Confucian classics.In the period of Song Dynasty, the feature of the social and political development was that scholar-officials enjoyed the political power. So, they believed that studying Confucian classics must be aimed to actual political affairs. Then, more and more scholars began to study’Zhou Li’, but fewer scholars study’Yi LI’. And ’Li Ji’ research was developed smoothly in this period. Zhu Xi had written two famous books of rituals, one is ’Family Rituals’, and the other is’Yi Li Jing Zhuan Tong Jie’. Both of them were based on’Yi Li’ research.More Confucians in the Song Dynasty had a theory of Rituals. Fan Zhong yan, Ou Yang xiu, Hu Yuan, Sun Fu and Shi Jie had discussed the value of Rituals in political practice. Li Gou and Wang An shi had discussed the relationship between the Ritual and human natures. Zhou Dun yi, Zhang Zai, Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi just took the discussion of Rituals based on the the theory of Li. All of their discussions impacted Zhu Xi’s thinking.Zhu Xi established a new theory of Ritual. He thought that Rituals was built on the foundation of Tian Li, and Tian Li through Rituals to performance. As an etiquette system, Rituals come from Tian Li. However, as a virtue, Rituals exist in the mind. So, it is necessary to strengthen people’s moral cultivation in order to keep the social order.’Zhu Jing’and’Ge Wu Zhi Zhi’are the basic methods of moral cultivation. Zhu Xi also believed that the sacrifice is a kind of Tian Li. All in all, the keynote of the thought of Ritual by Zhu Xi was to maintain the social and potilical order in the Song Dynasty. And to defend the doctrine of Confucianism was the keynote also. He absorbed predecessors’academic achievements on Rituals. So Zhu Xi’s thought of Rituals has a unique place in the history of development of Rituas study.
