The research on medical book collection of Guange before Qingli years of thenorthern Song Dynasty will shed light both on studies of Chinese book collectionhistory and medical history, and on present library development.This paper, from the perspectives of history, documentation, Traditional ChineseMedicine, library science, selecting the time span from Taizu、Taizong、Zhenzong toRenzong’Qingli years, comprehensively and systematically studies the organization andsystem of book collection, activities related with medical book collection, catalogue,reservation, utilization and management, as well as their historical contribution andpractical significance. Several conclusions are drawn from the research: Guangeactually refers to three Guan and Mige in the narrow sense, and Longtuge、Tianzhangge in the broad sense; Guange system is the endemic system of the nationalcollection of books in Song Dynasty, and it ensures the prosperousness of the nationalcollection of books by taking advantage of its political superiority; The medical booksthen are respectively deposited in the stack room of Zhaowenguan、the stack room ofJixianyuan、the philosophy room of Shiguan、the stack room of Mige and the lowerphilosophy pavilion of Longtuge; The mature methods of collecting books at Qingliperiod provides effective ways for the prosperousness of the the national collection ofbooks; The number of books Chongwen Zong mu (the version with Qian’s annotations)record actually reaches296species and2154volumes; The main contributions ofQiandong in medical book classification are not compiling annotations, but textualresearch; Guange mainly collects medical books of the Tang Dynasty, rarely of the Song Dynasty from the time of medical book’s completion before Qinglin years; Thetraditional Chinese medical science has been developed fully ranging from the basicknowledge to sections of clinic practice till Qingli years, among which prescription isthe most thriving, clinical practice has been well-branched, doctors have began to studyspecially The Treatise on Febrile Disease, health-keeping through sexology and takingminerals has been declined; Guange mainly focuses on book collection instead ofutilization, but it spares no effors to distribute books through publication once collationhas been finished, breaking the traditional situation of “government collecting andowning books”, realizing the preservation and utilization of book collection; Thescientific and complete management system of Guange succeeds in preventing not onlyhuman initiated loss, but also loss caused by natural factors; The biggest historicalcontributions of Guange is to preserve and hand down medical books, in which19original books can still be seen even now, and at the same time, to promote thedevelopment of acquisition, catalogue, version, collation, medicine, book collection andso on; ancient books that have been collected and preserved till present time will surelyserve and illuminate the localization and construction of modern library and libraryscience.
