Party fighting research is always a major issue in Research of Chinese ancient history. The research on party fighting in Northern Song Dynasty has been focusing on its late period, for example, the party fighting during the reign of Emperor Shenzong and in the in the period of Yuan You, and it has achieved fruitful results. It is a basic issue in the study on Nortern Song Dynasty politics, and needs further study.However, there is not much attention paid to that of the early middle period of Northern Song Dynasty. This dissertation is to interpret the evolution from political conflict towads party fightings and its cause, by presenting the party finghtings in the the reign of first four emperors. Meanwhile, it explores its influence on the failure of The Qingli New Deal, on Wang An-shih Reform, and more far-reachingly on the political situation of the late Northern Song Dynasty. It consists of four parts:Part One deals with the prevention to forming party and the undercurrent of party fighting, focuses on the measures to prevent forming party during Sung tai tsu’s reign and the early party fighting events in the army; Part Two is an introduction of the process from political conflict towads party fighting, focusing on the early political conflict and the forming of parties; Part Three is on the Qingli New Deal and the development of the parties,mainly about the struggle between reformists and conservatives during the reign of Renzong emperor; Part Four is an explanation of the features and effects of the political conflict and party fighting in the middle of Northern Song Dynasty.It presents us a vivd picture of the historical process from political conflict towads party fighting in the early middle period of Northern Song Dynasty. Meanwhile, it makes a systematic supplement to the study of party fighting in Northern Song Dynasty. In a nutshell, it enables us to have a better understanding of that issue from a new angle.
