Compared with other areas, the research achievements of the conditional complexsentences with markers in Modern Chinese are relatively few. The research achievements wehave gotten are mainly in the category; the related words; the fixed format; the comparativeresearch and application research. It looks very thin about the research of the conditionalcomplex sentences and the introduction of new theory is very limited. In view of this, thisdissertation tries to do the full range of research from discourse, syntactic, semantic and so on.It consists of the following seven chapters:Chapter1is an introduction. It first defines the object and scope of this study andprovides an overview of the current research as well as the objectives and methodology ofthis dissertation. It also gives an introduction to the significance and basis of the selected topicand the source of corpus.Chapter2is literature review. The study of complex sentence has a distant origin and along stream and has gotten abundant fruits. We summarize them from the main followingaspects: the category; the related words; the fixed format; the comparative research andapplication research.Chapter3is the syntactic and semantic system of the conditional complex sentenceswith markers. We describe the syntactic features from two aspects. One is the syntacticstructure. It should have two obligatory components from the structure----the related wordand the guided parts. The other is the mood. Here we adopt Hu Mingyang’s opinions, whothink it is the indicative mood, imperative mood, exclamatory mood and interrogative moodthat compose the modern Chinese mood system. The four moods have the correspondingreflection in the conditional complex sentences with markers. About the semantic system wemainly discuss three problems----the logical and semantic foundations; the categories of theconditional complex sentences with markers; the conditional strength of typical conditionalmarkers. The relation of condition----result and the related inference structures are the logicaland semantic foundations of conditional sentences;, we think Huang Borong and LiaoXudong’s opinion about the categories of the conditional sentences is more scientific, Theydivided them into three parts: sufficient conditions, necessary conditions and non-conditionalsentences. We mainly discuss the following problems about the conditional strength of typicalconditional markers. The grade sequence type of typical conditional markers is“zhiyou(chufei)”>”zhiyao”>”wulun(buguan)”;Whether the typical conditional markers andthe adverb appear or not will Influence the conditional strength; we give some operabilitible suggestions about the typical conditional markers’ teaching.Chapter4is diachronic observation and related analysis about the conditional complexsentences with markers in Modern Chinese. We divided the history of Chinese iinto fivestages: ancient times;medieval Chinese;modern Chinese;transition period;contemporaryChinese. We found the development trace of the conditional complex sentences by the fiveperiods’ comparision and did a brief analysis about the reason.Chapter5is discourse function of the conditional complex sentences with markers inModern Chinese. The main contents are as follows: a summary of discourse research about heconditional complex sentences, which contain the necessity and current situation of discourseresearch about he conditional complex sentences. the distribution of the conditional complexsentences, we made a count on the distribution of the conditional complex sentences indifferent styles and explain the reason of the uneven distribution. The logical connectionsbetween the conditional complex sentence and other sentences, for example adversativerelation, coordinative relation, concessions relation and so on. The coherent function of theconditional complex sentences displays in two aspects, one is promoting the discourse growthand development. It can be the discourse topic or the background topic when it is the firstsentence of the discourse; It can continue the topic or change the topic so that promote thediscourse growth and development when it is the other sentences of the discourse; The aboveanalysis are mainly on the basis of rhetorical structure theory. The other is undertaking theabove and ending the discourse. Here we principally study the conditional complex sentenceswhich is the last sentence of the discourseChapter6is the expression function of the conditional complex sentences with markersin Modern Chinese. The expression function in discourse has two representations----theobjective function and the subjective function. The objective function is mainly related to thenarration, description and illustration. The subjective function is mainly related todiscussion which is the viewpoint, standpoint and attitude in the speaker’s opinion. It isusually the subjective view of speakers’. We often use modal adverbs and modal verbs insyntactic form. We get an orderly scale about the subjectivity of the conditional complexsentences by corpus analysis. In addition, we have to judge the expression function of someconditional complex sentences according to the context.Chapter7is further discussion and conclusion. We summarizes the main discoveries andthe inspiratons as well as the problems and shortages of this paper and some other problemsthat we can’t research because of the time.
