The late19th and early20th century was the watershed of Chinese society, China bagan to transform from feudal society to modern society. It is said that the eastern ancient history preceded the western ancient history, however, the eastern modern history originated from the entrance of western culture. With influence of western culture since20th century, there is a new knowledge frame established in Chinese art historian’s mind. Along with the reform of society, the study of Chinese art history started its reform. In the first half of20th century, Chinese historian achieved fruitful research production on wide range of research perspectives and research technique, most of which was done with a perspective of evolution, however. Hu Man took a different approach to study Chinese art history in the perspective of Marxism materialist conception of history. His conception of history is closely associated with the times and the demand of revolution. Beyond that, he collected the research production of art under the guidance of Mao Zedong’s theory of art, which makes his work closed with the times.This paper focuses on Hu Man’conception of art history and art theory, but not including his paintings. It is divided into the following five parts.The first chapter is mainly to study Hu Man under the context of transition into modern times. This chapter focuses on the study of the background of transition and the stylistic patterns of transitional times, studying the position of Hu Man under the context of history.The second chapter is mainly to study Hu Man’s conception of history. This chapter focuses on Hu Man’s new perspective influenced by Marxism materialist conception of history and Mao Zedong’s theory of art. Apart from that, this chapter also studies the feature of how Hu Man wrote art history and academic struggle on Hu Man’s conception of art history.The third chapter studies Hu Man’s art criticism. Hu Man wrote a lot of articles about art theory in the time of revolutionary war. This part focuses on Hu Man’s viewpoint on ancient painting theory, modern painting theory and revolutional painting theory.The fourth chapter studies meaning and limitation of Hu Man’s conception of art history. This chapter makes a analytation on the distinctiveness of his art history in the field of art history and the meaning of his theory in that times. Apart from that, the limitation of Hu Man’s art history is also studied in this part.The fifth chapter makes a summary of this paper.
