A Sociolinguistic Research On Mongolian Internet Language

The internet may be the greatest human invention of all. It is the main platform of communication and information of this century. Depending on the age, gender, special interests, communication sphere of the people, and the content of the conversation, different kinds of texts are appearing. So called internet language has aroused the attention of linguists and psychologists around the world and created the new field, internet linguistics.This study explores the linguistic and interactional properties of informal asynchronous and synchronous computer-mediated communication in Mongolian. Using the social online media such as Face Book messages, comments as the primary source of data, the study identifies innovative uses of Latin, other scripts, punctuations and emoticons, and examines the incorporation of such informal spoken features. Young Mongolian internet users are found to employ colloquial language as if they were conversing offline, and interact appropriately with their fellow participants in their internet community.The research consists of an introduction, four main chapters, eight sub-chapters, the conclution, appendix and the bibliography. In the introduction, the author presents the theoretical and practical significance of the work, previous studies around the world, the goal and objectives of the work. The first part discusses the theoretical and practical background of internet linguistics, its main perspectives, research methods and future dimensions of internet linguistics. Internet linguistics is a sub domain of linguistics that was aroused on the boundary of other fields of linguistics such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and text linguistics. Although internet linguistics is in its infancy, it already has created its own methodology, theories, and research area. The rapid development of internet technology, different forms of language around the internet world have been receiving attention of many linguists. The internet language and its possible influence on language will become the main topic for the linguists in21st century. The second chapter discusses the forms of internet communication in Mongolia, their language use, and the language attitude of the youth of Mongolia in the social network sites.Nowadays, with the rapid development of the internet technology, the communication process of the people has been changed to internet communication in Mongolia. In Mongolia almost all different kinds of internet communication are being used and the internet communication has created the new form of language in Mongolia, internet language. Mongolian internet users adopt different kinds of forms of language depending on their social status, age, gender, and their knowledge skills of the mother language. However, the language prestige of the mother language has decreased and the language attitude towards the mother language of the youth of Mongolia has become rather worse. In the third chapter we considered the situation of the Mongolian language during this age of globalization and the social factors that influencethe language change in Mongolia. We also discussed the forms of the Mongolian internet language, the use of Latin, and its influence on Mongolian language. During this time of globalization the Mongolian language has been changed enormously and the development of internet technology has increased the speed of the change. Many different languages and scripts are being used in the internet communication in Mongolia, and they are influencing the standard language and safety of the language. In other words, the internet is a powerful tool to influence the language education of the public, and it plays a main role in a language use. However, in the internet communication the standard of the language is not being followed, new terminologies are being used incorrectly; many loan words from English and other languages are being used. Therefore, it is influencing on the language in a negative way.In the conclusion we sum up the evaluation of the research and mentioned our ideas about the possible further activities to help keep the language safe. The sociolinguistic research result on the internet language of Mongolia shows that there is a form of internet language in Mongolia and it has been changing the standard language by influencing the way of thinking of the youth of Mongolia. Therefore, the well-arranged language policy and the supervision on the use of language around the internet arebeing required.
