In socialist period, Mao Zedong still strives to work on the application of Marxism inChina and it lays a solid foundation for the latest development of Marxism in today’sChina. On the whole, researches in this respect are far from sufficient and therefore thisdissertation takes it as its research objectives. There is no doubt that this paper willconsolidate people’s understanding of Marxism and enhance researches of socialistictheories with Chinese characteristics. It’s the author’s belief that this thesis will be ofimmense value to China in both theory and reality. On the basis of the basic theories of Marxism and its systematic elements, backgroundin socialist period, Chinese socialistic revolution and modernization drive1953through1976, and Mao’s call for combination of Marxism with China’s actual conditions, thisdissertation tries to reveal Mao’s ideas on application of Marxism in China and the existingproblems and lessons. The author tries to be as close to the truth as possible in an attemptto make fair comments on Mao’s exploration in socialist period. This dissertation consists of five chapters besides the introduction and conclusion:The introductory part explains research background, significance, questions andmethodology. The first chapter focuses on four questions:1. the connotations of Marxism in China.2. the system and elements of the application of Marxism in China3. theinterrelationships among the application of Marxism in China, the background and thepeople.4. the specific features of Marxism in Chinese revolution, socialistic costructionand reforms. This chapter explains the importance and the definitive role of Marxism inChina and prepares for the following description. The second chapter is mainly about the background in socialist period. Mao’sexploration of Marxism is not of his own random choice during that specific period. Heinherits from the past and continues to do his own part. Setbacks, difficulties, mistakes andsuccess all have roots and Mao’s individual features. The third chapter mainly looks into Mao’s way of applying Marxism in socialistperiod. This hard process is divided into five periods based on the theme, main line, starterand so on: from a Soviet copycat to taking China’s own road, from turbulences and the ultra-leftist period to puzzling times. The author gives both general description andillustrations, and does what he can to stay objective. The fourth chapter focuses on the achievements and mistakes of Mao’s application ofMarxism in socialist period. The author puts forward to standards of innovation:1. To havea clear theoretical theme, main line and the logical starting point or not,2. To have aprofound and objective space-time and social background or not,3. To have greatsignificance and far-reaching influence or not,4. To have theoretical features or not,5. Tohave heterodoxy signs or not. The author lists five achievements of Mao’s exploration andbriefly describes active achievements. The fifth chapter is mainly about historic limitations and Mao’s cognitive limitations. The author analyzes the reasons why there is a repeated error in the process or applicationof Marxism in China. In the end, a conclusion is made that the application of Marxism into China requireslong explorations as many elements are interrelated. Mao is a great leader in Chinesehistory but he also commits mistakes. However, if Mao is put in the overall development ofMarxism in China, various reasons are accountable for these problems and mistakes andMao has done his own best. In China’s current history, Mao is still an awesome Marxistdespite the mistakes he makes in socialist period. His achievements and mistakes are bothCPC’s fixed assets and play a crucial role in the birth of Deng Xiaoping Theories and therelevant theoretical framework with Chinese characteristics. Needless to say, Mao’sexploration in socialist period has tremendous values and does exert significant impact onChinese history.
