Increasing global warming, air quantity issue, and the intensifying threanten to human health are caused by human activities. In the precess to search the cleaner energy, hybrid propulsion system has been proven to be a promising candidate to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, cut vehicle, operation cost, and it has been widely implemented in passenger vehicles and light duty trucks. Regular and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, for instance, the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt, have made huge success. However, the diesel-electric drive train with lower overall efficiency still applied in mining trucks, which contribute a significante GHG emisssion. Aiming at emission reduction and operation cost cut, this thesis provides a study on energy mangement strategy, optimization design, and next generation cleaner mining truck with a 300 tonnage mining truck through a real world duty cycle derived from an oil sand mine. With powertrain modeled in MATLAB/Simulink environment, a rule-based and optimization based energy management strategies are implemented in a hybrid electric mining truck. The production cost, GHG emission reduction, and the additional cost payback time are dicussed.Based on DIvide RECTangle (DIRECT) algorithm, several objective functions, including miles per gallon, prodution fuel cost, are selected to optimize the component sizing of hybrid minign truck. The delta trace, delta SOC, acceleration time, and grade ability are selected as contraints function. Meanwhile, the control parameters in rule-based energy management strategy are also optimized. To give a further improvement, the combination of natural gas engine and hybrid propulsion system is discussed. First of all, the mining truck performance is quantitative analyzed as the sacrificed torque in natural gas engine. This combination can bring a huge improvement in GHG emission, and production fuel cost.
