The Study On Urban Form Evolution Of Hangzhou Since The Reform And Opening-up

Hangzhou has a history of more than 2200 years.Since the establishment in Qin Dynasty as Qiantang,although experienced the prosperity during the Five Dynasties period and the Southern Song Dynasty,the city has always been in a relatively slow development and the urban form has not changed significantly until 1978.Ever since the implementation of Reform and Opening-up in 1978,particularly the city development speed-up in 1996,urban form has undergone tremendous changes.Hangzhou experienced two major adjustments of administrative divisions in 1996 and 2001,which has changed the original urban structure and achieved the goal of Cross-river development.A new round of adjustment of administrative division has been ushered in 2014,Hangzhou is facing a new form of integration.From a global point of view,the evolution of Hangzhou city form is a special stage of the whole process of historical evolution since the introduction of the Reform and Opening-up.Based on the review of Hangzhou's urban development and its urban construction,this study firstly established the historical coordinate system which relied on the urban development;after considering Hangzhou's urban form evolution process since the Reform and Opening-up as research object,this study then combined it into the coordinate system of the whole process of development in Hangzhou.During the study of the evolution of urban form of Hangzhou,the author has combined graph comparison and data analysis,which is indeed a combination of qualitative research and quantitative research.Thanks to the program of"Urbanization Challenges and City Organic update of Hangzhou" which appointed by the Government of Hangzhou,the author obtained a large number of first-hand city maps and data of Hangzhou.On the one hand,this study,by comparing the contours of each historical stage,comprehends the overall direction of Hangzhou city's outer contours,and followed by importing the conclusion of data analysis to corroborate the evolution of Hangzhou city's outer contour.In this study,with the aid of the spatial syntax "graph-data" analysis method,the configuration of roads in Hangzhou has been taken as the object;and the evolvement process of interior structure of Hangzhou was interpreted by contrasting the urban road construction graphics and data characteristics of the most significant years.On the basis of a large number of graphic comparison and data analysis,this dissertation not only summarizes the evolvement characteristics of the outer contours and internal structure of Hangzhou since the Reform and Opening-up,but also concludes the evolution process of the city form in Hangzhou.Where after,this research focuses on the motive and mechanism of the evolution of urban form;and combs the motives and mechanisms with a series of practice by Hangzhou characteristics since 1978,in hopes that it can be a reference for the follow-up development in Hangzhou and other similar cities,and can providing useful experience and supportThis dissertation consists of six chapters:Chapter 1 briefly reviews the background of this study;summarizes the relevant domestic and external theories and researches;introduces the analytical methods;and outlined the ideas and research framework.Chapter 2 takes Hangzhou city history as the main line,which reviews the construction process of the City;Chapter 3,taking the urban administrative divissions' area and the urban built-up area as the research objects,this dissertation analyzes the evolvement process of urban external contours of Hangzhou since the Reform and Opening-up with the method of "graphic-data analys",and then summarizing its growth scale,expansion direction and expansion mode;Chapter 4 mainly studies the configuration of roads(axial maps of Hangzhou),and employing spatial syntax quantization technology to analyze the evolution process of Hangzhou internal structure from 1978.Moreover,this Chapter analyzes and interprets the structural characteristics of the integrated and partial cores of the City.Chapter 5 discusses the influencing factors,motivations and mechanisms of Hangzhou's urban evolution since the reform and opening-up,and sums up a series of effective mechanisms for the healthy development of urban form of Hangzhou.Chapter 6 summarizes the results of the whole study,and drawing out countermeasure to the future urban development since the reform and opening up.In the end,the dissertation also offered suggestions for the future development of Hangzhou urban form development and prospect of future research is also given.
