The mono-centric development hinders the big cities from getting bigger. The concept of polycentric development has emerged as one of the hallmarks of the emerging field of spatial planning. Hangzhou is now undergoing the critical period of transformation from mono-centricity to polycentricity, which relevant problems follows. This article is a report of the empirical study on polycentricity of Hangzhou, based on previous research at home and abroad including theories and practice, by the methods of analyzing collected multiple spatial data. Having outlined the distribution of resident population, commercial activities, public service and the transport links between centres, the author analyzes the present situation, dynamic trends and problems of polycentric structure of Hangzhou city. Combining the theoretical study and practice experience, the picture of polycentricity in Hangzhou urban district is presented, along with spatial suggestions to achieve it.
