In this study, we studied the effects of dietary yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) supplementation on growth, gut health and disease resistance of Nile tilapia under different stress conditions, i.e., normal rearing density and high rearing density. Also, the contribution of secretory metabolites to the mode of action of yeast was investigated by comparing the beneficial effects of live and heat-inactivated yeast, as the secretion of metabolites relies on yeast viability. The main conclusions are:1. Probiotic yeast may improve the growth performance, gut health and disease resistance of tilapia at normal rearing condition.2. Live yeast reduced the inflammation status in the intestine of tilapia at normal rearing density.3. Live yeast alleviated the stress status and cancelled out the negative effects of high rearing density on gut morphology and disease resistance of tilapia.4. Secretory metabolites of yeast played the major role in improving gut microvilli morphology, reducing intestinal inflammation status, and alleviating the stress levels in tilapia.5. Both rearing density and yeast have no significant influence on the intestinal microbiota of tilapia.
