In the Chinese realistic ink figure painting, the transformation of itslanguage has been uniquely characterized by the introduction of the “integration of Chinese and western styles” approach in the 20 thcentury. As a diachronic research, this dissertation aims to probe into the relevant factors which influence the development of the language in the Chinese realistic ink figure painting and its characteristics in different historical stages so as to explore the rules of the evolution of its language. The realistic ink figure painting has been influenced by the joint effect of social environment factors, the cultural ideological trends and the political atmosphere since it came into being. As a result, the evolution of its language has also been affected by the aforementioned external factors and responded to them.In the development of the language of the Chinese realistic ink figure painting, the dynamic relationship between the internal rules and the external factors always exist in different historical stages,in which the degree of this relevance between them differences according to the different historical contexts. On the basis of the stage characteristics of the language in the realistic ink figure painting, the researcher divided it into four stages: the first one is the forming stage(from the early 1900 s to 1949).At this stage, influencedby the trend of “the integration of Chinese and Western styles”,the western realistic modeling was introduced in the language structures of Chinese traditional painting so as to set the foundation of the realistic ink figure painting. However, the Chinese ink figure painting at that time lost the charm and the imagination of traditional ink painting art.The second one is called the developing stage(from 1949 to1966).During this period, the western realistic modeling was reconciled with the traditional ink in the Chinese ink figure painting, even though it went through policy changes and debates on the Chinese traditional painting. The third stage is in the Cultural Revolution period(from 1966 to1976),when the realistic ink figure painting was turned into a political tool.As a consequence, its language with the special style of that time was suffered from the abuse of “art in cultural revolution”.The last stage is called the reforming stage(from 1978 to 2016).With the influx of western modern art thoughts, the language in the realistic ink figure painting has broken up the boundaries of cultures and traditions and develops towards the direction of diversification. In summary, the evolution of the language of the Chinese realistic ink figure painting is the demands of inner law development and the mutual interaction of the outer elements such as the social environment factors, the cultural ideological trends and the political atmosphere. The research of this subject contributes to identifying the relevant conceptions about the realistic ink figure painting and exploring the characteristics and the driving forces of its language development in order to provide support for studying the evolution of the language in the Chinese realistic ink figure painting in the future research.
