Today we are faced with two major problems:environmental problem and ethical one.Even the planet we live on is polluted so much that the air and water are polluted.Distrust among people begins to spread so wide that ethical problem is becoming a norm.Taoism has a role to play in improving the situation worldwide.Sun Simiao(541-682 A.D),a great philosopher and physician in ancient China, contributed much to oriental philosophy. The author studies the health preserving culture of Sun Simao in order to use it for our time and the future. In the thesis, the author discusses the origin, composition and contributions of Sun's life philosophy in six aspects. In Introduction, the author describes why the topic is chosen and how the study could benefit the society. In this section, the author gave a summary about the findings and developments of Sun's life philosophy that have made in the recent years. The author tries to find facts and base the reasoning on them. The author expounds Sun's life philosophy and discusses his frame of health preserving methods. In the first chapter, the author explains Sun's background and the books he wrote. In the second chapter, the author throws light on Sun's Taoism thinking and health preserving beliefs, starting with how Tao Te Ching affected Sun and how Sun's preventive treatment theory and dynamic health preserving philosophy derived from Taoism. The author shows in the chapter how Sun understood Taoism and used it in his book Qianjin Fang.In the 3rd chapter, the author described how Sun skillfully used Confucianism,Buddhism and traditional Chinese medicine theories to enrich his own methodology, which established his position as a milestone figure. In the 4th chapter, the author explained what Sun may mean by health preserving by tracing to the origin of his nature cultivation. The author also studies Sun's clinical practice and relevant theories about cultivation of both nature and life.In the last chapter, the author summarized Sun's unique theory about philosophy in four parts:fact-based view of nature;ethics of medical treatment;following Yin and Yang concept,at peace with arts of destiny;health reserving based on sex and science.Sun's life philosophy is very important to both clinical theories and practice and plays an important role in meeting the environmental challenges. The author studies intensively Qianjin Fang and other literature with a view to understand Sun's life philosophy and therefore his position in this field with four methodologies.First, philology methodology;the author studies Sun's works, historical literature and other latest studies.Second, comprehensive analysis methodologies, the author finds implications for the future from Sun's works.Third, intellectual history methodology;Sun's unique life philosophy demands that the study is more than merely discussion of one single subject of Taoism or medicine. In other words, intellectual history methodology is adopted to study the cross point of Taoism history and medical history.Originally proposed by Zhang Qizhi,a renowned Chinese professor, the methodology makes this study much different from other ones about Sun's works.Fourth, the combination of intellectual history and social history. The methodology was created by Hou Wailu(1903-1987),a renowned historian, thinker and educationalist in China, who advocated independent thinking and innovation. The study is innovative in following respects.First,it is designed to approach Sun's opinion about human body in a brand new attitude, especially from the respect of Taoism.Second,in order to understand Sun's philosophy in an all-round way,the author analyzes it in the broad landscape where Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism tend to integrate.Third, the author explains about the essence of the philosophy based on expounding Sun's basic philosophy structure.Fourth, the author describes Sun's contribution to life philosophy to better reflect his position in the field of life philosophy.Fifth, the author elaborates how Sun's philosophy is different from other philosophers in terms of the view of nature, ethics of medical treatment;destiny analysis,sex-based health reserving, with a view to do justice to Sun's value.
