There is not a definite theoretical scope of "rhetoric" in the western academic circles,which has long been penetrated into the boundaries of linguistics,philosophy,art,communication and so on.Therefore,this thesis first gives a definition to"rhetoric"-----rhetoric is a theory which studies "signification" starting from the study of "relationship".In this thesis titled Signification and acceptance:an Introduction to the Rhetorical Theory of Film Performance,the main question raised by the author is why we think there is a kind of "performance" in the film.If there is,how is the meaning of performance in the film conveyed to the audience?Does the film performance need some laws in the process of conveying the meaning?Who conveys the meaning,the performers,the text itself or the audience?The thesis is aimed to look at the performance of the film in a phenomenological way.The essence of film performance is a kind of "rhetorical relation",which means we can apply the rhetoric theory to the study of the film performance.This thesis explores the relationship between performance and rhetoric from two aspects-----discourse and text.The former is mainly to describe the relationship between rhetoric subject and audience,and the latter is to describe the general structure of the expression in the performance of a film.Through the joint effects of the two levels,a complete system of film performance rhetoric can be established.Through this research,the thesis tries to help us understand the essence of "watching activity",to further reveals the "rhetorical features”of the "film performance" itself,and finally to establish a comprehensive system of movie acting theory of rhetoric.The structure of this thesis is as follows.In the first chapter,the nature of the film performance is defined,the research object of rhetoric is described,the relationship between rhetoric and performance is pointed out,the composition of the performance and rhetoric is illustrated.and the film performance rhetoric is considered as a way of expression.In the second chapter,the author mainly discusses how the significance of the rhetoric of film performance comes into being and describes it from the following three aspects:"symbol","symbolic framework" and"text".In the third chapter,the author mainly discusses the rhetoric phenomena in film performance,distinguish them from the two angles of "positive rhetoric "and"negative rhetoric" According to the different ways of expressing the meanings,more than ten different kinds of rhetoric approaches are presented.As a result,the author explains in film performance the basic characteristics,which include "indefinite grammar rhetoric","mixed approaches" and "unknown meaning".In the last chapter,the author mainly discusses the role of the audience in the construction of the relationship between performance and rhetoric,pointing out that "encounter" is the origin of all relations.At the same time,the author illustrates three feedback levels from audience,which consist of "Gestalt creation","meaning interpretation" and"aesthetic judgment".Finally,the "audience" acting as the main body is added to film performance rhetoric,which makes the relationship an excellent performance.
