Ross Lee Finney(Ross Lee Finney 1906---1997),as one of the influential American composers in twentieth Century, went through a course from relatively traditional to modern to the subtle combination of these two aspects in his composing career, and formed a unified and opposed style.Mr.Finney is a prolific composer who composes a wide range of works, including four symphonies,a large number of concertos, orchestral music, chamber music, piano, vocal music, etc. His early works show the characteristics of Native American music.Around 1950,Finney began to study twelve-tone systems and other modern composing techniques. After combining with the characteristics of traditional music and theory of mirror symmetry, one of the most important techniques is axis symmetry of hexachord in his later works. This paper selects several Finney's piano works after 1950 and does the techniques analysis.Through chronology of his works, the paper has fully demonstrated the course that the composer how to study?practise?master the atonal modern music and finally combinates the traditional music and do the reinnovation.Combined the twelve-tone systems, axis theory, symmetrical structure and hexachord axis symmetry theory with his own creative ideas, which forms the inheritance and innovation interaction, interdependent relationship. The whole body is divided into three main parts:introduction, main body and conclusion. The introduction part introduces the research object and research scope, domestic and foreign research status and its academic value. The first chapter introduces the composer Finney's life and writing style. The second chapter is an overview of the symmetry theory which is often used in Finney's later works. The third chapter and the fourth chapter analyze the technique based on chronology of his piano works. The fifth chapter is the analysis of the composer's creative thought through the rational and perceptual level. The final conclusion is the summary of the works of Finney in the hexachord axial symmetry theory and other related composing techniques given to students currently studying music in the teaching of practical guidance and help etc.
