Research On Thought Of Cultural Imperialism

The trend of cultural imperialism is one of the main discourses of modernity reflection and critique, with specific historical and social background of its emergence and development. In the historical background of Western modernity reflection, this paper, guided by the Marxist philosophy, analyzes the social historical roots and theoretical origin of the trend of cultural imperialism from the perspective of cultural philosophy and cultural studies, adopting the research method of integrating macroeconomic research with micro-case analysis, the method of combining history with logic, the method of scientific comparison as well as text reading (hermeneutics) on main representative figures of the trend of cultural imperialism and the research approach of contextualism. By differentiating and analyzing such concepts as cultural imperialism, mercantilist imperialism, political imperialism, cultural hegemony and cultural colonialism, this paper analyzes the emerging and developing process of the trend of cultural imperialism and reveals its essence.On the basis of the predecessors'achievements, by sublating the British scholar Tomlinson's four discourses of cultural imperialism—media imperialism discourse, "nation-state" discourse, global capitalism critique discourse, and modernity critique discourse, this paper innovatively puts forward an analysis pattern of "One General, Three Specifics" for the trend of cultural imperialism. The so-called "One General" is the general reflection of Western modernity, while "Three Specifics" refer to the specific study of the modernization trend, the post-colonial trend, and the globalization trend. The critique and reflection on the western modernity, in essence, are based on the three specific studies. The trend of cultural imperialism permeates in the reflection of Western modernity and is demonstrated by the modernization trend, the post-colonial trend, and the globalization trend. Therefore, this paper contributes in the following three aspects. First, it examines the cultural imperialism in the modern context; analyzes the ideological modernization theories; indicates the similarities and differences among modernization theory, adherence theory and world system theory; study Herbert Schiller's cultural imperialism critique theory; and evaluates the trend of cultural imperialism in the context of modernization. Second, it investigates and evaluates the cultural imperialism in the postcolonial context by taking Edward Said's concept of Orientalism and his theory of cultural imperialism as examples. Third, it analyzes the globalization trend as ideology; studies Tomlinson's theory of cultural imperialism and Jameson's theory of cultural logic of late capitalism; and evaluates the trend of cultural imperialism in the context of globalization.The systematic research of the trend of cultural imperialism indicates that its reasonable factors are embodied in revealing the multilayered structure of cultural imperialism, analyzing the major characteristics of cultural imperialism, and analyzing the practical form of cultural imperialism. On this basis, the dissertation summarizes the theoretical features of the trend of cultural imperialism, revealing the various contradictions, problems, and the limitation of Cultural Imperialism Trend, and proposes main strategies to deal with it after making a systematic and objective evaluation of it.The research and analysis on the trend of cultural imperialism enable us to identify its essence, which is not only of practical significance to help us enhance the cultural strategy research and ensure the security of national culture, but also of theoretical significance and practical value to strengthen the socialist cultural construction and the ideological and moral construction, to critically absorb the heterogeneous culture and to construct a strong socialist culture power.
