Foreign Imperialism Theory Research

The theory of international relations is a young subject. From the beginning of the 20th century, discussions on imperialism have been a lot. The theory of Imperialism is abundant in content, and is closely linked with the international situation. In the complex world situation at that time, the works of imperialism theory of classical Marxism came into being. They expounded the cause of imperialist powers waging war, the characteristics and the essence of imperialism and so on, these problems concerned by countries of the world and especially the proletariat. Through research, analysis, absorption and criticism, they completed these works, and pointed out the direction for the proletariat. In the 21st century, western left-wing scholars published successively many books and research results which attack imperialism ideology bloated by western right-wing and centrist.Taking the view of representatives as perspective, this paper probed into the imperialism of Marxism and research of western left-wing scholars to imperialism. Based on research of imperialism theory of classical Marxism, combining the study of western left-wing scholars to new imperialism in the 21th century, and analyzing the ideology of modern imperialism and its supporting theory, and studying the formation, development and the end of American imperialism, as the typical representative of new imperialism, and the paper proposed the strategy choice of China in the practice of new imperialism. The paper has seven chapters.The first chapter is introduction. It mainly introduces the basis of topic and the research significance, the status of domestic and foreign research, ideas and structure, research method and innovative points.The second chapter is about imperialism theory of classical Marxism. It mainly analyzes and interprets imperialism theories of Kautsky, Lenin, Bukharin and Luxemburg, and studies definition, essence, the basic characteristic and future of imperialism. Do this is very necessary for studying new imperialism.The third chapter is about the emergence and development of Western new imperialism theory. This section analyzes the classical theory of imperialism represented by the Hobson and Hilferding and the new imperialism theory represented by David Harvey, Allen Wood, Michael Hart and Antonio Negri. On the basis, the paper compares meaning, characteristics and essence of new imperialism and traditional imperialism.The fourth chapter analyzes the manifestations and essence of modern imperialism. There are four manifestations of new imperialism, that is, economic imperialism, military imperialism, political imperialism and cultural imperialism. Among them, the economic imperialism showed the field of virtual economy and real economy; military imperialism manifested in the military alliance, and the war waged by new imperialism also is the form of military imperialism; political imperialism shows the political output and seeking hegemony of new imperialism countries and the establishment of so-called international "new" order; cultural imperialism showed the cultural output, including theory and popular culture, and emphasis on aggression of "soft power".The fifth chapter studies the typical ideology theory of imperialism of modern Western liberalism and its critique. Political culture dominated human political behavior; the core of political culture is ideology. Western countries, in theory, proved legality of the existence in the practice of political, economic, cultural imperialism, the practice of legitimacy. This section analyzed and criticized the theory of historical end, the theory of democracy and peace, theory of hegemonic stability and the theory of universal values and human rights without borders, and exposed their essence.The sixth chapter analyzes the imperialism of United States. as a typical imperialist. Some scholars believe that the so-called New Imperialism refers to the United States. This paper studied the generation and characteristics of U.S. imperialism and the problems it faces and the causes which it would decline.The seventh chapter is a new imperialism and China's strategic choice. There have many differences between China's diplomatic ideas and the new imperialism countries. China follows advancing with the times, independent, and adheres to peaceful development. In the current complicated international situation, the constraints of the new imperialism, China should enhance the strength, strengthen international cooperation, enhance national cohesion and solidarity, and keep the mentality of big country.
