Since the reform and opening up in 1978,China has gone through nearly 40 years of economic reform.Along with the reform, rural migrant workers phenomenon appeared in different historical periods.Migrant workers appeared since the reform and opening up,but the phenomenon of rural migrant workers going to the cities can be traced back to the planned economy and the initial period of rural reform. There are a handful of rural laborers who work under the management of the production team. They are often referred to as "temporary workers recruited from rural areas".From the view of job status, form, interests and other aspects, the "rural temporary workers" and the later self-decision-making,large-scale migrant workers are very different.Changing from the "rural temporary workers" to migrant workers is a historical process, contains some important changes. And the time span of migrant workers involved can be further subdivided into periods of limited identity and rights, and the period of promoting equality of rights. In this way,the phenomenon of rural laborers entering the city is historic and spans several periods. These periods correspond to different social backgrounds, and their development and change may constitute one of the aspects of China's reform and opening up.Therefore, for the social phenomenon in this change, the method of historical comparative analysis is used to study the trajectory and regularity of the change. At the same time,it is assisted by semi-structured depth interview,to portray the group image of rural migrant workers in different periods. This paper divides the migrant workers into three different historical periods, and applies the three periods of planned economy, market reform and double transformation to rural migrant workers. In this study, the historical comparative analysis method is used to investigate and compare the employment characteristics and the corresponding status of the migrant workers in different historical periods, etc. This article has explored the phenomenon of migrant workers in rural areas, and focus on the migrant workers after the reform and opening up,especially the migrant workers in the 1990 s,and examine the employment status and status of rural migrant workers after entering the new century.Through the analysis,it is concluded that the employment status and status equality of rural migrant workers are greatly improved under the background of deepening reform. The innovation of this paper is to extend the timeline of migrant workers' research to the planned economy period, attempting to apply the historical comparative analysis method to the rural migrant workers research. This is also a relatively new attempt, hoping to have some efforts to get research contributions. The main drawback is that semi-structured interviews do not play enough roles throughout the study, and improvements are needed.
