A Study On Relationship Between Industrial Structrure Upgrading And Trade Structure Optimization In Pearl River Delta Area

As a pilot area of the reforming and opening up, Pearl River Delta area has become the most marketized district open to the outside world by making bold and innovative use of the geographic advantage, grasping the historic opportunity of international industry transfer and factor restructuring. During the past thirty years of development, the upgrading of industrial structure and trade structure have enabled Guangdong Province to transfer from an agricultural province to an economic giant, and laid the foundation for becoming the world manufacturing base. This has been driving the national economic development and provides precious experience for other provinces. However, economic development models for any regions aren't fixed; and the development model of Pearl River Delta area has been challenged by both domestic and international factors. Under the pressure of the international financial crisis and the structural problems, many deep-rooted problems of the model have emerged and the traditional development way has been challenged.Researches mainly focus on the international trade field and there is a need for an overall and comprehensive research for Pearl River Delta area from the perspective of economic development industrial structure upgrading and trade structure optimization. With both quantitative and qualitative methods and on the basis of the development industrial structure upgrading and trade structure optimization theory, the desertation conducts a review of the development of the Pearl River Delta area. Then it analyzes the interaction between development industrial structure upgrading and trade structure optimization, clarify the mechanism, examined the coordination, draw advanced experiences and make suggestions for policies. The main questions of the desertation are as follows:What is the relationship between the industrial structure upgrading and trade structure optimization? The industrial structure upgrading in Pearl River Delta area is driven by the trade structure optimization? The trade structure optimization is how to influence the industrial structure upgrading in Pearl River Delta area? These two effects are exerted by what mechanism? How much is the mutual influence of both? What are the reasons of blocking this interaction? How policymakers should eliminate the adverse factors?The desertation consists of six chapters. First is introduction which illustrates the background, review of domestic and international research, research methodology and content as well as innovation and shortcomings. Second is theory analysis. This part lays the foundation for the later parts by elaborating the theory of industrial structure and trade structure. In the third part, we conducted a systematic and comprehensive illustration of the development of industrial structure and trade structure in Pearl River Delta area and a well-rounded analysis of its thirty-year development form both the internal and external economy point of view. The fourth part is empirical analysis. We first analyzed the mechanism of industrial structure upgrading and trade structure optimization, and then from three perspectives, conducted empirical analysis in the interaction between the industrial structure upgrading and trade structure optimization in Pearl River Delta area. In the fifth part, we examined the existing problems and analyzed the reasons in order to make suggestions. In the sixth part, we reviewed the development history of Japan, and Singapore as well as drew conclusions and lessons. Then we made suggestions in how to better upgrade industrial structure and improve the trade structure in Pearl River Delta area, from three perspectives:synergy of macro strategy and policy management at the macro level, synergy of industry at the medium level, and synergy of company strategy at the micro level.However, industrial structure upgrading is a complicated issue. Besides the factor of international trade, it's also affected by various other factors including population, employment, institution, international politics and economic environment. So it would be too simple if we ignore those various factors and merely analyze the relationship of trade structure and industrial structure. Therefore those related factors should be taken into consideration in future study, which will be my main research field and will be more practical and insightful.
