Natural resource is a prerequisite of man's living and material basis of economic development. Rich resource has been considered to be an important promoting factor to the economic development for a long time. However, there appears a phenomenon that the economic development of those countries full of natural resources becomes slow, and this phenomenon is called "resource curse". After the concept of resource curse is put forward, many researchers have pay attention on the impact of natural resources on economic development. Nevertheless, most of the researchers aboard pay attention on the impact of natural resource on the international level and the mainly studying objects of domestic researchers are provinces of China. There are few studies on resource-based cities. The Northeast Area is the old industrial base of China and contains rich natural resources and plenty of resource-based cities. These cities have provided a large amount of energy and raw materials to the country during the development, and at the same time, there have appeared a number of problems in the social and economic development with the deepening of resource exploitation and development, such as the economic development becomes slow, industrial structure suffers from imbance and ecological environment has been declining. Therefore, whether the resource-base cities fall into the resource curse trap is a topic worth deeply discussing. This paper summarizes the researches on resource-based cities and resource curse effect, tries to build an econometrical model of resource curse effect, and discusses the existence of resource curse effect and the active mechanism influences of the resource-based cities in the nearest twenty years from the perspective of resource curse effect. On this basis, this paper analyzes the coordination degree of different resource-based cities in Northeast China. Combing the current development of resource-based cities and previous findings, this paper provides strategies and suggestions for the sustainable development and city transformation of resource-based cities. This paper is divided into eight parts:The first chapter is the introduction. Based on the systematical summary of the research progress of resource-based cities and resource curse effect at home and abroad, this paper introduces the research purpose, research status, research methods and research route. The second chapter states the relevant concepts and theories that are employed in the paper, and the theories include sustainable development theory, economic growth theory, industrial structure development theory, externality theory, life cycle theory and the theory on reginal division of laborers and work. The third chapter analyzes the definition of resource-based cities and the general situation, developing history and problems during development, and on this basis, this paper makes a preliminary judgment about the current development situation of resource-based cities in Northeast China. This chapter is a qualitative analysis to the resource-based cities and lays the foundation for the model building and quantitative analysis. The forth chapter considers the role that geographical factors plays in the economic development and rebuilds an econometric model to test the existence of resource curse effect. After the data processing and panel model choosing, this paper analyzes whether the resource curse effect exists in the resource-based cities in Northeast China during the preliminary test, cross-section data test and panel data test, and obtains the result that resource curse effect does influence the resource-based cities. Based on this result, this paper analyzes the different appearances of resource curse effect before and after the strategy of revitalizing the Northeast's old industrial base. The fifth chapter raises the possible hypothesis on the basis of existence of resource curse effect, builds the econometric model of the transmission mechanism of resource curse effect and separately tests the hypothesis of the transmission mechanism of resource curse effect by panel data. Quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis are both used to sum up the main reason causes the resource curse effect in resource-based cities. The sixth chapter builds the coordination degree model by using the method of coupling degree and evaluates the coordinated development of four systems of economy, social, resource and environment. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the spatio-temporal differences of the coordination degree of resource-based cities and studies the typical city of Daqing whose coordination degree grows rapidly in recent years. The seventh chapter recommends corresponding suggestions on the sustainable development of resource-based cities in Northeast China. The eighth chapter is the summary and conclusion of the entire paper.
